I looked at the texts between me and Madi thinking about what to tell her. What could I tell her... I knew she was coming over for our date and I still did what I did. I know she's worried but I- I don't have the heart to text her right now. A knock on the door through my attention off from my phone. The door opens and the doctor came in. Shutting the door behind him and getting some hand sanitizer from the dispenser. I place my phone beside me.
" you doing okay today Alex? He says
" yes sir " I said
" I'm Dr. Webster. I'll be here with you for your stay." Dr.webster says
" thanks. Where's my mom? I thought she would be here?" I ask
" went to grab some coffee while you took your nap. She'll be back " Dr.Webster said
" I'm sure my family is worried " I said
" I'm sorry. I've been keeping them really well updated on what the nurse and I have observed" Dr.Webster said
" fuck. My girlfriend. We were going to be having a date when this happened " I said
" she's ok from what your mother has said she visited you but you were sleeping when she came. " Dr.Webster said.
" I feel so bad I worried her so badly. " I said I could feel bandages on my wrist. I ran my hand over and sure enough.. bandages. I look down and saw the clean white. Looks like the nurse put a fresh set on. I could feel Dr.Webster eyes on me as he watches me.
I watch him pull up his left sleeve of his white coat and shirt. I look at his arm as I see the same lines that are on my arm. I look up as we make eye contact.
" this is our secret, you're not alone " Dr.Webster said
" you can always get the nurse to call me if you need to talk while you are here. " Dr.Webster adds.
" thank you " I said
He pulls down his sleeves as the door opens again as mom walks in carrying some coffee and what looks like a sprite for me
" sweetheart you're up!" Mom said trying to act cheery.
" brought you a sprite. Your favorite " mom said
" thanks " I said
" I was just checking in and telling Alex here that he should be able to go in two days. The bandages will come off the morning you leave along with the IV. " Dr.Webster said
By this time I sorta zoned out as Dr.Webster continued to talk to my mom. I look down at my wrist and saw a bandage again . I knew exactly what happened. I started to rub the hospital gown on my bandages. I then remembered what happened that night.
Everything started to come back. the events that happened that I was trying so hard to block out. I took a few deep breaths and looked up.
" Alex do you mind if I examine you?" dr.Webster asked
" no sir" I said
Dr.webster came over and checked my breathing and my IV to make sure it was still good. I think I heard him tell my mom that the nurse may have to put in a new one since they sure a small one when I was admitted or something along those lines.
Two days later
The nurse came in and sat on the edge of the bed.
" time for the IV and bandages to come off" she tells me
I nod my head yes. I reach out my left arm as she starts to undo the tape around the IV. I've been in the hospital enough to know how much this tape is gonna hurt when she finally gets to the IV. I squeeze the sheets and took a deep breath and she said " ready". She moves up to my bandage. I honestly didn't want the bandages to come off. I'm scared to see my arm.
Slowly she takes the tape off and unwraps my arm. I look down when she was all done. The red lines were prominent. I knew they would be. I don't know why I thought they would have faded under some wraps. I got changed into my sweatpants and sweatshirt dad brought from home for me.
Dad opened the door to the house. I walked inside and everyone was huddled in the living room. As soon as they saw me they rushed to give me a hug. I am not good with a bunch of people at once. I am so much of an introvert. I noticed Madi was not at the house.
" Madi is with her mom today. She wish she could have made it. She will be here tonight for dinner" Mom whispers to me.
I smile a little. I head up to my room as Nathan follows. I think Cole followed along. I was not paying attention. I head into the room as Nathan sits on his bed. I collapse on the bed letting my head hit the pillow.
" You gave us a scare Alex" Cole said standing in the doorway
" Scared us shitless" Nathan tells me
" Im sorry. I thought I was getting better. " I said
" Close the door. I dont need mom and dad hearing this" I said
Cole omes in the room and shuts the door.
" It started when I was at Breck with Madi. The voices started to come back. " I said
" Dose Madi know?" Cole asks
" She saw my arm. That is it" I said
" I gotta run some errands with Jackie. Be back soon. " Cole said
Nathan and I watched Cole leave the room and shut the door behind him. I look over at Nathan who was looking down at my arm. My hoodie sleeves were still down since the window was open. I rolled up my left sleeve and showed Nathan. I have shown Nathan my scares before so the was not anything new.
" Alex..." Nathan starts to say
" I know." I said
" I am just glad you are okay. I was so worried about you. We all were" Nathan said
" Im okay" I said
" Alex.. you said that last time" Nathan said
" I know. The doctor gave me some meds and they seem to be working so far" I said
" What are you gonna say to Madi when she comes over tonight?" Nathan asks trying to change the subject
" I dont know not that one. Ive been trying to think about what to teller for days now and I got absolutely nothing" I said
" I can try to help you come up with something" Nathan says
" Thanks" I said I pull y sleeve down on my hoodie.
