Emily has searched just about every book in the store; including non-fiction. After around two hours of book searching, she picks three books; all being the same series. I had never heard of the series, but she seems pleased with it and we finally were able to leave to small store.
"Are you ready for lunch yet?" I ask Emily.
"We just had breakfast!" She laughs.
"Yeah but it was hard work following you around with all those books."
"Okay fine, let's get some lunch." Emily rolls her eyes at me then smirks which makes butterflies flutter in my stomach.
We stroll out onto the gravelly floor, heading towards our car until a voice stops us.
"hey." An officer calls from a few feet away, walking towards us.
I clench my jaw then smile at the officer. "Hey, officer. What can I do for you?"
"Yeah, is this your car?" He raises an eyebrow at the car with his hands on his hips.
Fuck. What do I do?
"No, officer. We are on foot today." I chuckle, trying to stay calm. "May I ask why?"
"There is an alert around for this vehicle. I am going to have to search inside which would be a lot easier with the owner." The cop sighs and walks to the vehicle, opening the car door with an extending baton.
My heart feels as though it Is going to jump out of my chest right onto the gravel floor in front of me. Emily stands closer to me and takes my free hand. In my left, I hold hers and in my right I hold her bag of books. I gather my fear is visible, which makes me scold myself.
"You two are free to go." The cop looks over to us then back at the car. He is probably wondering why we are still standing here.
I have all of our money in there... our tent.... our clothes. Without it, we have nothing. What do I do? My eyes scan the parking lot and I realise it is completely empty but us. My hand slips out of Emily's and the bag of books tighten around my fists. The plastic digs into my skin, making it turn white.
Swiftly, I fill in the gap between me and the cop. His head stays in the car, examining the dashboard. My hand swings the bag in a circular motion, reaching the head of the officer. His body slumps forward and lays across the seats, unconscious.
A sigh escapes my lips when I tilt my head at the unconscious man. I pull him out of the car by his shirt and throw him on the ground.
"Come on." My head motions toward the car when I look at Emily, who still stands in the same spot.
"Did you kill him?" She mumbles.
"No but If we stay any longer I'll have to."
With that, Emily climbs into the passenger seat of our car.
"That was crazy, I thought you were going to get caught for sure."
"You have little faith in me." I laugh at her, reversing out of the small parking lot and into the larger road that leads straight to the highway.
"No, I trust you. I just didn't see much of an opportunity in our situation."
My lips form into a smirk and I remove one hand from the steering wheel to rest on her thigh.
"so where to now?" Emily enquires
"Well we need a new car. This one is like driving around in a banner that reads "I'm a kidnapper and a murderer"."
"Where are you going to get one?"
"We are near the beach."
"So?" Emily frowns at me, clearly confused.
"Just trust me, baby." I grip her thigh tightly.
......
The car slows down in a parking lot near the beach. Around thirty feet infront of us are a row of fisherman, deep in concentration.
"Okay I need you to do something for me." I unbuckle my seatbelt and look over at Emily.
"What is it?" Emily copies my actions, not wanting to fall behind in my plan
"Just go and distract the fisherman for me. Make sure they don't look over here at all."
"Okay." She nods. "I can do that."
I step out of the car and turn to her. "Which car do you want?"
"Mmm the black." Emily points over to the black corvette.
"Good pick, gorgeous"
Emily's point of view
I have never had to distract someone like this before. I don't even know how to go about it. A few years ago, I visited my brother in the hospital he lives at. It was one of the only times I went. I distracted the ward whilst he took the candy from my bag and stuffed it under his mattress. I didn't understand why they weren't allowed Candy, it seems like a harmless thing to me. I always wanted to go visit him and help him escape but my mother didn't allow me. She said he was dangerous. After a few visits I had with him, he finally warmed up to me. Even though he tried to kill me, I think I am his favourite in the family. My parents never visit him and my grandparents haven't saw him since way before I was born.
"Hey" I smile warmly at a fisherman and the other three men turn to look at me. My clothes aren't very appealing since I am wearing leggings and Luca's hoodie so going to flirty route might not be the best option but it seems like my only option.
"Well hello there." The man smiles back. "What's got you out here?"
"Oh I just came for a walk. Having any luck?" I look over to the rods, cast out into the ocean.
"Oliver there caught a sea bass. The rest of us 'ain't been so lucky." He points over to the man named Oliver who stands a few feet away.
"Awh that's a shame." My hand rests on his arm.
"What's your name?"
"Mine? Oh it's violet." I lie.
"Pretty name for a pretty girl." The man chuckles. "I'm Mike."
"It's a pleasure, Mike." I hold out a hand for him to shake, and he does. Letting his hand linger on mine a little too long. I gaze back to where Luca is, I see him putting our belongings into the black corvette.
"So have you been out here long? It's pretty cold by the ocean." Another man asks me.
"Oh yeah a little while. I'm heading back home now."
"You live close?" Mike questions.
"Uh huh." I nod slightly. "Just over on that hill there." My arm stretches out and my finger points over to the large house on the hill, looking down on us.
"Wow, you must have a lot of money with a house like that." He bites his lip.
"A normal amount I suppose."
"How old are you, Violet?" Oliver asks me.
"I'm 18." I lie again.
"A little young." Mike laughs. The man on the end, after Oliver, just stays quiet between all of this, focusing on his rod.
"Oh I must be going. My mother is expecting me home. Goodbye." I smile at the men.
"We'll see you later, sweetheart. We fish here often so keep an eye out for us." Mike laughs and they all turn back to the their rods.
Just as I am about to walk away, I notice a box of their belongings beside me. Two boxes. One Including sandwiches, drinks, a sweater, extra bait, an extra reel and car keys. The other is closed, but I assume it holds fishing gear inside. I look over at the car and see a symbol on the back which matches a symbol on the keys. The symbol is of two flags, one black and one red. I pick up the key in my hand then speed-walk over to Luca before they notice it's missing. Once a few feet away, I run the rest of the distance and hop inside the car.
"Hey." I smile and pass him the key.
"Well, hey to you too gorgeous. Well done." Luca kisses my cheek and stars the engine of the car.
