This takes place before the band is super popular, the boys are still really young, branch being a year old at the oldest. John Dory gets sick and the brothers are worried about him because he's never gotten sick before.
John woke up, turning off their alarm clock. He didn't feel good, his head felt heavy and he felt sore. JD just chalked it up to overdoing it at rehearsal yesterday and got out of bed, stretching before going to wake up each of his brothers. John Dory started with Floyd, waking him up by gently shaking him. “Rise and shine Flo." JD said when he saw Floyd's eyes open. Floyd sat up, rubbing his eyes and face as he finished waking up before walking over to Branch’s crib. Branch only liked Floyd waking him up, being cranky the whole day if anyone else did it, so John just let Floyd do it. JD moved on to waking up Clay, climbing the ladder to his bunk and shaking his legs. Clay was a little harder to wake up than Floyd, he often fought John for “five more minutes" until the very last minute, complaining that he didn't have enough time to get ready. “Mhmn, five more minutes." Clay mumbled, half awake. “No, come on Clay. It's time to get up, I don't feel like doing this today.” John responded, waiting a few moments to see if Clay would actually get up. When he didn't, John Dory started shaking him again. " Come on banana hair, it's time to get up.” JD said, climbing to the top of the ladder to shake Clay's body. " I don't wanna, squarehead.” Clay protested, trying to move away from John. JD was starting to get a headache, already over his antics. “Clay, we're not doing this today, just get up and stop your whining. If you get up now, you'll have enough time to eat, get dressed and read whatever book you're excited about reading before school. You just have. To. Get. Up.” John Dory said while shoving Clay on the last three syllables. Clay groaned loudly but finally sat up, sporting a scowl and some wild bed head. John hopped off the ladder, walking over to the other set of bunk beds in the room to wake up Spruce. John Dory climbed the ladder, knowing Spruce would be easier to wake up than Clay. “Spruce, Spruce, it's time to wake up bro." JD said, gently shaking his legs. Spruce woke up much easier than Clay but sported a similar scowl and bed head and added a love letter stuck to his cheek. John hopped off the ladder and walked into the bathroom to see Clay and Floyd brushing their teeth, baby Branch sitting on the counter watching his brothers in the mirror. John Dory grabbed his toothbrush, putting toothpaste on it before sticking it in his mouth. John brushed his teeth for a moment before reaching over to fix Clay's hair. JD switched between brushing his teeth and fixing Clay's hair. After finishing up Clay’s hair, John looked at himself in the mirror, he looked tired. John Dory really needed to stop staying up late to write their songs but then they would never get done. “John, can you change Branch’s diaper while I get dressed?” Floyd asked, holding up a stinky Branch. "Yeah I can do that Floyd, give ‘im here.” John Dory said before reaching for Branch. The smell of the stinky diaper hit John's nose causing his stomach to churn. John laid Branch down on the changing table, taking off his onesie before actually starting on the diaper. JD felt his mouth salivating as the smell of a dirty diaper made him more nauseous. Branch, who was normally a fighter when it came to getting his diaper changed, was actually laying still for once, staring up at John Dory curiously. John got done changing the diaper, dressed Branch in a new onesie and leaned against the changing table, trying to calm his stomach. After he felt like his stomach had calmed down enough, JD picked up Branch, carrying him to their room to give him back to Floyd. Branch leaned his little head against John's shoulder and grasped on to John Dory's pajama shirt, sucking on his pacifier softly. “Ok Bitty B, time to go back to Floyd." JD said as he tried to pass the baby but Branch clung to John's shirt, whining softly through his pacifier. “Aw, he actually likes you today." Spruce teased as he pulled on his pants. Clay snickered, not saying anything as he slipped on his socks. Floyd tried to take Branch back but Branch's grip held firm. John Dory finally just flung his shirt off, letting Branch have it. Branch whined again, reaching for John. JD sighed, sitting on the floor next to Branch as he got dressed. As John Dory pulled on his socks, Branch crawled into his lap, staring up at him with curious eyes. After all of them were dressed, John ushered all of them downstairs for breakfast, Branch insisting on being carried by John Dory. JD placed Branch in his high chair, Branch immediately whining and reaching for John. The behavior wasn't normal but not very unusual, Branch did have days where he only wanted one of the brothers, his favorite being Floyd. “Aw, is someone fussy this morning?" Grandma said, crouching down next to the high chair. Branch looked at their grandma before turning back to reach for John, whining like he was trying to tell them something. Breakfast was served, scrambled eggs and bacon. Grandma Rosiepuff took to feeding Branch, hoping to distract him from John Dory. It kind of worked, Branch wasn't whining but was still staring at John, trying to voice his thoughts. The other boys quickly ate, hungry as young boys are. John Dory just picked at his food, not very hungry. The breakfast plates were cleared and grandma Rosiepuff made sure each of the boys had all the stuff they needed for their day at school. " Alright boys, shoes. Let's get a move on.” Rosiepuff said while she held Branch on her hip, Branch was still trying to reach for John Dory. They left the pod, walking towards the school house. Once at the school house, grandma gave them each a kiss on the forehead goodbye, Clay and Spruce groaning from embarrassment. When she reached John, Branch practically jumped into John Dory's arms, JD scrambling to make sure he didn't drop the baby. “Aw Branch, don't worry you'll see John later. Come on peach fuzz, let him go." Grandma said as she tried to pull Branch off of John Dory. “Come on Branch, let go. You'll see me later." JD said as he tried to pull the little baby hands off his shirt. Clay and Spruce quietly chuckled, snickering at the ridiculous scene. Floyd reached over to help their older brother and Grandma. Finally Branch let go, eyes tearing up as Grandma Rosiepuff took him away to the baby room in the school house. As they went their separate ways, they could hear Branch crying loudly. John Dory and Spruce walked together, most of their classes in the same direction. “You good bro?" Spruce suddenly asked. The question snapped John back into reality, not realizing he had zoned out. “Hmm? Yeah I'm good, just kinda tired." JD replied as they came to their lockers. “I told you to stop staying up so late writing songs, we have plenty of time to get famous. We're still young and good looking, well I am, you not so much." Spruce teased before opening his locker, a love note falling out. John Dory rolled his eyes, not in the mood for his brothers and their antics today. The day went on as usual, slow and boring. John was ready to go home, not even wanting to go to the rehearsal he had planned the day before. Clay ran out of the school, excited to be “free" while the others just walked. Grandma Rosiepuff met them at the entrance, having to go get baby Branch. Branch looked like he had been crying, tear streaks down his cheeks and his eyes red. He immediately reached for John Dory, Branch whining loudly. John took Branch, bouncing him lightly to calm him down. “Poor Branch was apparently crying all day." Grandma informed them as they walked home, Branch dozing off in John's arms. They arrived at the pod, JD gently placing Branch in his playpen to finish his nap. The boys kicked off their shoes by the door before sitting at the kitchen table to start their homework. The pod was quiet except for the scratching of pencils and the occasional question. Despite the silence, John Dory was having trouble focusing on his work, his headache coming back. After they all finished their homework, the younger boys waited for John Dory to start bossing them around like he usually did for their rehearsals. John flopped onto the couch, flicking on the TV. The other boys soon followed afterwards, doing what they usually did after school. Soon Branch had woken up, calling for Floyd, Floyd being the only brother who's name he could say. Floyd got Branch out of his playpen, sitting him on the floor to play with him. Branch seemed to have forgotten about how much he wanted John Dory's attention. John stared at the TV, not really watching it, mindlessly flicking through the channels every so often. JD leaned his against his hand as it rested on the arm of the couch, dozing off slightly. Clay saw this and took it as his opportunity to mess with John. Clay gently took John Dory's arm, placing it palm up. Clay took shaving cream and a feather out of his hair, readying himself to execute his plan. “Clay, don't." Spruce said firmly, noticing what Clay was trying to do. “What are you talking about? I'm not doing anything." Clay said innocently as he shook up the can of shaving cream. “Leave him alone Clay. You know it never ends well for you." Spruce said, setting his magazine to the side. Floyd and Branch had taken notice of what was about to go down, Floyd agreeing with Spruce. “It's fine, it'll be fine. Don't worry." Clay said mischievously as he leaned down to spray the shaving cream into John's hand. Spruce sighed before getting up to stop Clay's shenanigans. It was too late though, the shaving cream had been sprayed and Clay was already tickling JD's nose. John rubbed the shaving cream on his face, immediately waking up. Clay was ready for the chase that usually happened but John just groaned and stomped over to the bathroom to clean his face. “See? I told you it was fine." Clay said, crossing his arms confidently. Suddenly Clay was hit in the face with a pillow, he flopped backwards on the couch. John Dory had thrown a pillow at him, Clay sat up, ready for this pillow fight. Clay didn't see John by the bathroom, he looked around the room for a moment when he felt the back of his ear be flicked. " Ow John!” Clay said, holding his ear. " You got off easy today, I told you to stop doing that.” John Dory said, leaning over the back of the couch. " You're not the boss of me.” Clay shouted, standing on the couch. “Actually I'm the oldest, so I am the boss of you." JD replied, gently shoving Clay. Clay dramatically flopped back onto the couch, glad to see John wasn't too mad at him. Spruce threw a pillow at Clay's face, joining in on the fun. “Hey that's not fair, it's two against one." Clay whined slightly as he threw a pillow back at Spruce. “I'll help you Clay." Floyd said, jumping up and grabbing a pillow to hit John with. The boys had a pillow fight, Branch laughing and giggling at his silly older brothers. After a while, the boys laid sprawled across the floor and couch. John Dory was laying on the floor near Branch. Branch crawled over to him, placing his small hands on John's face, making a noise of concern. John Dory chuckled before leaning over to blow raspberries onto Branch's stomach, Branch laughing. The other three smiled, enjoying one of the rare days where there were no fights between any of them. Grandma Rosiepuff called the boys for dinner, serving up a portion for each of them. Grandma had made stew, the homemade smell hitting their noses. They ate dinner and talked about their day, even little Branch joining in the conversation with his baby babble. “Hmm, that's so interesting Branch. I'd love to hear your opinion on homework.” Clay joked, prompting Branch to continue his excited babbling. After the dinner, the boys were allowed an hour and half more of free time before bedtime. Grandma put on James and the Giant Peach for the boys to watch, knowing they would never be able to pick a movie they’d all agree on. The boys watched the movie, Clay and Floyd quietly explaining the plot to Branch since it was his first time seeing the movie. Clay talked about how the movie and book were different, despite the fact that Branch probably didn’t understand what he was talking about. John could hardly keep his eyes open, not really interested in the movie, hearing Spruce talk about how the two of them were too old for the movie despite the fact that he was intently watching it. John Dory dozed off, leaning his head on the arm of the couch. After the movie was over, it was time for the boys to get ready for bed. They were about to head up the stairs when they realized they were missing a member, JD still laying on the couch. Clay immediately pulled a marker out of his hair, wanting to go draw on John’s face but Spruce stopped him. “Don’t. I told you we were too old for that movie, even John fell asleep. Probably because he's been staying up late writing songs for the band. And he didn’t even force us to rehearse today, let's cut him some slack.” Spruce said as he took the marker from Clay, gently shoving the younger boys up the stairs. Spruce watched them go up the stairs before turning towards John, it wasn’t like him to fall asleep during a movie, especially a movie that the two of them could jokingly make fun of as the preteens they were. Spruce walked over to where John Dory laid, gently shaking him awake. “John, JD, come on dude. I will let you sleep on the couch if you don't get up." Spruce teased as he saw John’s eyes opening, looking a bit unfocused. “You good bro?” Spruce asked as JD sat up, stretching and nodding. Spruce looked at John suspiciously, it wasn’t like him to be quiet. The two of them went upstairs to their room, finding Floyd playing with Branch, and Clay sitting up in his bed reading. “I thought you guys were supposed to be in bed.” John Dory said jokingly as he walked into the room, ruffling Floyd’s hair as he walked by before changing into his pajamas. The youngest two scrambled to get into bed, their grandma coming in to give them their goodnight kisses and tuck them in. The lights flicked off and soon the sound of soft snoring filled the room, it would have been a comforting sound if John could get comfortable. He was too hot, then too cold and he couldn’t get comfortable. Eventually he fell into a restless sleep.
