John didn't mean to, he really didn't but old habits die hard.
John Dory went to go check on Clay, he was taking longer than he usually did to get changed for their annual movie night.
JD just walked up and opened his bedroom door, an old habit he had from when they were kids.
John opened the door and saw Clay in his pajama pants, about to put his shirt on.
"What the fuck John?" Clay shouted, causing JD to close the door.
John Dory had to make sure of what he saw, opening the door again, causing Clay to yell at him again.
John closed the door and walked downstairs, thinking about what he saw.
He had seen Clay's ribs, his hip bones, and the vertebrae of his spine.
John Dory didn't like that, his brother was too skinny.
JD remained deep in thought as he came back downstairs and plopped down on the couch.
"Is he good? I heard yelling." Bruce asked, nudging John when he didn't get an answer right away.
John Dory nodded, still deep in thought.
Bruce decided to talk about what John could be thinking about later, it wasn't often John Dory got that look on his face. The look of being deep in thought about something that was worrying him.
Clay came downstairs, glaring at JD as he sat on the floor next to Floyd.
John didn't even acknowledge Clay's glare, staring at his brother's back, trying to see if he noticed the vertebrae through the shirt.
You could see them through the shirt but it wasn't super noticeable, the shirt being loose on Clay's frame.
After a couple of movies, they decided to turn in for the night, the others going to their room but Bruce headed to John Dory's room.
"Hey JD, can we talk?" Bruce asked, standing in John's doorway.
"Yeah what's up?" John Dory said, inviting Bruce in before closing the door behind him.
"You were thinking about something really hard earlier, after you went to check up on Clay. What was it? You don't get that look on your face often, what's on your mind? It usually means you're worrying." Bruce asked, sitting on John's bed.
John looked unsure and hesitant before answering.
"When I went to go check on him I did that thing of not knocking and just barging in like I used to do when we were kids. When I did, I saw Clay didn't have a shirt on. I immediately closed the door but I had caught a glimpse and I had to make sure I saw what I saw. So I opened the door again and I had seen right. I saw Clay's ribs and his hip bones and the vertebrae of his spine. And now I'm worried he's not eating enough and not getting enough nutrients. But I don't know how to approach him about this because I know he's still kind of mad at me. So I was thinking about that and how to fix it. I worry about him, ya know? I worry about all of you." John Dory said, worry in his voice as he rubbed his arm.
Bruce was quiet for a minute as he took in what John had said.
Clay had always been on the leaner side and he thought that had just carried into adulthood.
Bruce would have to see for himself, not that he didn't believe JD but he wanted to make sure of it.
"I understand your worry John. But I'm sure he's fine. He's always been skinny. I'm sure if he wasn't eating enough we'd notice. Relax." Bruce said, placing his hand on John's shoulder comfortingly.
