It's gotten worse. Tw for vomiting
The next morning the boys woke up to their alarm clock blaring annoyingly, Spruce got out of bed and shut the clock off, wondering why John didn’t wake them up and turn it off. John Dory was curled in on himself with his blanket tucked in tightly around him. Spruce stretched before deciding to do the wake up call this morning, meaning he only had to wake up Clay and John since they were the only two still asleep. Spruce climbed the ladder to Clay’s bunk, shaking him awake. “Five more minutes.” Clay mumbled, pulling the blanket over his head. “Nope, not today.” Spruce said as he grabbed the blanket, pulling it off Clay. Clay shot up, not used to Spruce being the one waking him up. “What, square for brains made you wake me up this morning?” Clay grumbled as he got up, climbing down the ladder and noticing John Dory was still in bed. Clay watched as Spruce woke up John, a bit worried before heading to the bathroom to get ready. John got up, feeling terrible. He had a sore throat and a headache and his joints ached. JD walked downstairs, looking for their grandma to tell her he didn’t feel good. John found her in the kitchen making breakfast. “Grandma, I don't feel good.” John Dory said as he walked into the kitchen, the smell of the chocolate chip pancakes making him nauseous. “Oh no you don’t. You’re not getting away with that today. I have too many errands to run today to have you stay home, now go get ready for school” grandma Rosiepuff said, shooing him off as she continued cooking. John sighed, knowing this was karma for faking being sick one too many times. John Dory went back upstairs and got ready like he was told. John looked longingly at his bed, wanting nothing more than to curl up in it and sleep the rest of the day. The boys walked downstairs, all but John excited for the chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast. JD picked at his breakfast, not wanting to eat, grandma Rosiepuff eying him before rushing them out the door. Once at school, they had a similar situation to yesterday, Branch clinging to John while babbling incessantly. After pulling Branch off of John Dory again, the boys headed to class, Spruce keeping an eye on John. John Dory wasn’t acting like himself and it had Spruce worried, he was quiet and spaced out. They parted ways until the end of the day, their grandma taking back to the pod before going to leave quickly. Before she left, she called Spruce into the kitchen, saying she needed help with something. “What’s up Grandma?” Spruce asked as he stood in the kitchen, waiting for her to tell him what she needed. “I want you to be mature and responsible today. John clearly isn’t feeling his best and I want you to help him keep your brothers in line. He’ll still be in charge while I’m gone but I need you to help him if they don’t listen to him. Can you do that for me, Spruce?” Grandma Rosiepuff said, placing her hands on his shoulders. Spruce nodded curtly, silently promising her that he would help John Dory. Grandma Rosiepuff headed out the door, telling them that she loved them and reminding them that John was in charge while she was gone. The boys continued doing their own things until Clay and Floyd started fighting over the remote, the fight starting out as a tug of war match then turning into a full on screaming match. JD asked them to be quiet, then told them, then tried yelling at them which caused a coughing fit. Finally Spruce stepped in, yelling at the younger two to stop their bickering. Clay and Floyd immediately froze in place, it was not often Spruce yelled at them. Spruce walked over to them and snatched the remote, turning on some random baby show for Branch before heading to the kitchen where JD had gotten himself a glass of water. “You good JD?” Spruce asked, gently rubbing John’s back. John Dory nodded, taking slow deep breaths and sipping the water. Clay and Floyd sat in the living room, pouting slightly at being yelled at. The evening continued, the boys somewhat getting along, Spruce having to step in every so often. Soon enough, they were getting hungry, Floyd being the one who decided to wake up John Dory to ask him to make them something to eat. “John? Can you make us something to eat?” Floyd asked. John sat up, unaware that he had fallen asleep. “Yeah, sorry. What do y’all want?” JD said as he stood up, stretching before going to the kitchen to see what he could make for his brothers. “Can we have dinosaur chicken nuggets? And mac and cheese?” Clay asked excitedly as he followed John into the kitchen. JD ran a hand across his face, nodding slowly before getting the stuff he’d need to make them dinner. Clay and Floyd left the kitchen, wanting to play with their toys rather than watch their brother cook. Spruce stood in the doorway for a moment before walking over to John. “You good dude?” Spruce asked, truly concerned for his brother. JD nodded and gave him a weak smile. Spruce watched John for a moment for going into the living room to make sure the younger ones were getting along. A little while later, the food was done and John Dory called them into the kitchen to get their food. “Why aren’t you eating John?” Floyd asked as the rest of them ate their dinner. “I’m just not that hungry Flo. Don’t worry, just eat your dinner.” JD said, starting to clean the dishes he had used when cooking. Once done with the dishes, John sat at the table trying to force himself to at least eat something. Branch babbled at John Dory, it almost looked like he was scolding John. JD smiled at Branch before his face turned sour, he quickly got up and ran to the bathroom. John Dory started throwing up what little he had eaten, most of it being stomach bile. Once his stomach was empty, John started dry heaving, tears streaming down his face. His brother weren’t very far behind him, hearing John puking. Spruce stepped into the bathroom and walked over to John, crouching down next to him and rubbing his back as he dry heaved. Clay and Floyd stood in the doorway, watching worriedly. Once John Dory’s stomach calmed down, Spruce stood up and grabbed the thermometer. Spruce handed the thermometer to John for him to put in his mouth, waiting for it to beep. “Jesus John, 102.6. That's pretty high, we gotta bring your temperature down.” Spruce said before placing the back of his hand against JD’s forehead. John closed his eyes, Spruce’s hand feeling cool against his skin. “Maybe we can give him that nasty tasting medicine grandma gives us when we’re sick.” Clay suggested from the doorway, Floyd going to get Branch who started crying from being left alone. “We can’t give him any medicine until he can stomach food, which I don’t think he’ll be able to do for a little bit.” Spruce said before walking over to their linen closet, grabbing a washcloth and wetting it with cool water. “Anyway we can help Spruce?” Floyd asked, lightly bouncing Branch in his arms. “I don’t think so right now. Let’s just get him to the couch and then try and bring down his temperature. Hopefully grandma gets home soon.” Spruce said as he tried to help John Dory stand up, John waving him off before walking over to the couch to lay down. The brothers shared a look of worry, a little unsure of what to do, not used to having to take care of John Dory. JD laid down on the couch, grabbing a blanket to cover himself up with. Spruce sat next to John on the couch, placing the wet washcloth on his forehead, John sighing from the cool feeling. Clay and Floyd decided to quietly watch TV, turning on a kids show. Spruce watched John, not used to being the responsible one. About half an hour later, JD seemed to be feeling a little better. John sat up, Spruce went and got the thermometer, taking John’s temperature again. “101.2. That's better than it was earlier. Think you’ll be able to keep some toast down?” Spruce asked, JD not really paying attention. Spruce placed his hand on John’s shoulder, catching his attention. John Dory looked up, zoning back in before nodding slowly. Spruce stood up and went to the kitchen to make John some toast, Branch crawled over to JD, whining to be picked up. “No Branch, I don’t want you catching what I have.” John Dory croaked out, his throat raw from the vomiting. Just a moment later their grandma walked, seeming a little surprised to see them still awake. Grandma Rosiepuff was about to start scolding John for letting his brothers stay up so late when she noticed how poorly he looked. “Oh John, you really didn’t feel good this morning, did you?” she said, concerned. Grandma Rosiepuff walked over and felt his forehead, pursing her lips in concern. Spruce brought the toast in, giving it to John along with a glass of water. “Ok boys, I know you’re all concerned for your brother but it’s way past your bedtime. Go on, head on up to bed.” Grandma Rosiepuff said, shooing the boys up the stairs. After the other boys went upstairs, Grandma Rosiepuff went back over to John Dory, who was nibbling on the toast. “I’m sorry I didn’t believe you John. It’s been a long week, I’ve had way too much on my mind and I took it out on you. I’m so sorry honey. How you feeling?” Grandma Rosiepuff said, sitting next to JD and pulling him into a hug. John leaned against her shoulder before speaking, whining slightly. “Bad. I have a headache and a sore throat. I’m cold but I'm sweating. My stomach hurts but I’m hungry.” Grandma Rosiepuff frowned, pulling JD closer to her, gently rocking him. John couldn’t remember the last time he enjoyed being held like this. After a few minutes, grandma told John to head up to bed, telling him it's late. Rosiepuff felt terrible, she hadn’t believed John Dory when he said he didn’t feel good and now he was very sick. She went up and tucked each of the boys into bed before heading to bed herself, preparing herself to wake the boys up in the morning.
