Behind the Lie

"I'm fine"
Is a phrase we can no longer hide behind

It used to mean just as it says;
"I'm doing okay."

But now people have started to realize
That often times it means
"I'm not too great."

As a result, people like me
No longer know what to say
When people ask
"How are you doing today?"

We stop.
We freeze.

"I'm fine"
Bubbles to the surface
The only response we can come up with in that moment.

But they would know that's a lie.

Not because of my tone
Or facial expression.
Not because they already know
So they asked the question.

It's because
The term
"I'm fine"
Has been brought into the light.

And now
I must find a new phrase to hide behind

One that has not yet been exposed
For all to see

I tell them
"I'm doing pretty good."

And that seems to satiate their hunger
Their need for some kind of insight
Into the state of my mind.

They have not yet seen under this new hood.

So I will do my best
To wear these woven lies
As a mask

Until the next
'News flash
