"'I May Fall is another "general themes" type of song.'" The note read out. "'More specifically, it's both a prediction of the future...and a stand against fate and defeat. Found it particularly appropriate for Volumes 7-8. It's a mission statement, really. This copy I've had put in might not have the best quality, but you'll still get everything you need to. So, enjoy.'" And with that, the song began.
[There's a day when
Our hearts will be broken
When a shadow will cast out the light]"Off to a pretty cheerful start, I can see," Blake deadpanned.
"Thaaaaaat doesn't sound good." Nora added.
"Wait, so when it said "prediction", did it mean-" Jaune began.
[And our eyes cry a million tears
Help won't arrive]"Is this, like, describing something that's actually gonna happen?" Ruby asked, panicked. "Like, to us?"
"It's pretty vague, s-so maybe not?" Weiss tried to argue. "I mean, who knows?"
Ozpin just shut his eyes.
[There's a day when our courage collapses
And our friends turn and leave us behind]"No they won't, I mean, no I won't." Ruby fiercely declared. "I don't care what's going to happen, I won't leave any of you behind."
The others nodded at that, though Blake looked downcast for a second. Could she promise that? All she did was run away, after all. It's what she's good at. "Whose voice is that?" A part of her mind asked.
[Creatures of darkness will triumph
The Sun won't rise]"What, the Grimm?" Yang asked. "They've been trying forever, and they haven't won. Hell, most people are safer than ever."
"Also, that bit with the sun is kind of overdramatic." Nora opined.
Ozpin opened his eyes again. He hoped they never found out just how fragile their peace was, how She was still working in the shadows. Undoubtedly, the song knew about Her.
[When we've lost all hope
And succumbed to fear]"We won't!" Ruby declared. "I don't care what the future brings us, WE. WONT."
"...Perhaps it's not solely referring to us," Ozpin got out. "As was pointed out before, the ten of us can't do everything in this "story" alone." He sounded convincing enough, so why did it sound to Blake like he...also wasn't convinced himself? If she wasn't paying attention to the man she wouldn't have noticed it, but...
[And the skies rain blood
And the end draws near]"How is this supposed to be "standing up" to fate"? Ruby asked. "It's just...saying everything's gonna suck one day and that's it?"
"That...may not be it." Pyrrha declared. "Destiny isn't some kind of...fixed event. More of a path, I believe. Also," she pointed out, "the song's not over yet."
"It's barely even started." Blake added.
"I guess..."
[I May Fall
But not like this
It won't be by your hand]"Ah!" Ruby shouted out a bit overdramatically. "That's different! ...what does it mean, though?"
"Kind of a big shift, yeah." Jaune agreed.
