"Hey, wake up, I found some of this in one of the cabinets in the kitchen-"

Jay nudged me awake from the middle of the bed and I rubbed at my eyes with the backs of my hands, the room was dark now and it dazed me a bit, had I really slept all day? He sat down on the bed with me and offered me a bowl of what looked like baked beans and cut up pieces of hot dogs. It smelled repulsive so I just rolled over and buried my face into the outer part of his left thigh, I felt him shrug before he ate what he tried to offer me and throw the bowl into the far wall where it shattered into pieces before falling to the carpet.

"Figured as much, but hey, we can't really...go hunting around here so at least I tried. You kept waking me up every few minutes so I gave up on sleep hours ago."

He fell over in bed with me and I swung myself around before I propped my head up on one elbow to get a better look at his face, he had dark circles under his eyes and a hollow look to the tops of his cheeks.

"I know you're lying, wanna talk about it or should I let you suffer in silence some more?"

He rubbed at his face with his hands before he took a shallow breathe and crossed both his arms over his chest like he was being laid to rest in a coffin.

"Ok fine, fine, I did sleep....for a little bit anyway. But then I just kept seeing Holly's face everywhere...I loved her with every fiber of my being but I don't think this depression is going to go away any time soon, and that concerns me a little bit. I wanna be at my best if I'm going to be here for you."

One of his hands unfolded and sought mine out in the darkness and I let him hold it without complaint, one, because I knew that he needed it, and two, despite having slept all day apparently my body was still dead tired. It took maybe half an hour of our combined breathing and body heat mixed together before the both of us slipped off into slumber where thankfully my thoughts were dream free.

*Days Later*

"I don't....I don't get it. These are the only buildings left of this place? It's an old train depot..."

We reached the end of the tracks after a few days worth of travel but we hadn't bothered to try and go in yet, we were going to wait for our people but so far there was no sign of them and we'd been scouting this place out for two days now. So far all we saw were men and women toiling in some garden plots near the biggest set up in the place and some men with long swords and guns along the inner fencing; something about this place made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on edge but I couldn't figure out why.

"Belle, use your brain would you? These tracks would lead to a place like this so I don't know what you were expecting, a hotel or some shit. I will say we should go with your plan though..walk in and act as innocent as possible- it would be worth it even if we only stay long enough to find our people."

"Mm..maybe, but won't it look weird if we show up in there without any weapons? Call me an idiot, but after the Governer...I'm not exactly thrilled about anyone else finding out about what we are. We don't know who these people are or what they're capable of. There's something...robotic about the way some of these people move around."

We stopped talking and crouched lower into the grass when a heavyset looking man walked past with a loaded AK-47 strapped over his left shoulder, Jay had one hand pressed into the small of my back to make sure I stayed smushed flat into the ground; once the dude was well enough away he turned to look at me with a small grin.

"We might be two halves of a broken puzzle, but alright. Let's do what we need to do- but I want to ask you something first."

"Now?"

"Please."

I shrugged his hand off me and got up to my feet when I knew the coast was clear and he cleared his throat a few times before leaping up onto his own feet.

"Erm...now, you know me better then anyone, and I don't really know why I'm so hard pressed to ask...but would you kill me if I kissed you right now? I just.....wanna see if anything's changed between us."

"....no, I wouldn't, but he just might."

Jay rolled eyes before he sighed and leaned across the gap between us to place a quick little kiss on my left cheek, his touch left a weird patch on my skin that tingled with an odd warmth that wasn't unpleasant; he was smiling by the time I blinked.

"I have an idea- but we're gonna have to play dumb for it to work."

*

"Weapons on the table please."

Garret's face pulled down into a frown when we layed our spear point sticks down on the table and examined their heads even closer, Jay had ripped a few slim branches from a low hanging tree outside and sharpened their points before he rubbed some dirt along their edges; to convince them we used them since we didn't have any guns.

"You actually use these and they work?"

I nodded but kept my mouth closed as Jay told me not to do, and his hand stayed firmly clamped on my right shoulder, we were in a large warehouse like building with a singular table in the middle but we had at least seven guns trained onto our backs.
