*That Night*
"No, no way in hell am I wearing that thing."
The sky had turned inky black a few hours ago but I found out that I could see just as well as I could during the day so Jay and I had taken to walking up and down the rows of cars to look for clothes, he leant me his button down shirt that stopped mid-thigh but he was complaining about having to be shirt-less. He found a snowy white looking dress in the back of an old looking Prius but the neck line of the thing was a little too much for my tastes.
"C'mon, try it on at least Belle. We can't exactly go shopping for some new clothes you know, this is the best you've got right now."
Lights were popping in and out of the darkness at the side of the road we were closest to and I yanked the dress from his hands before stomping around the side of an old Toyota to change, I slipped the shirt off and slid the dress in place before I yeeted his shirt over the tiny truck; the lights reached the road by then and I walked back around to Jay who looked grateful to finally have his shirt back. Whoever it was grunted in pulling themselves over the railing and I couldn't help but smile; it was Daryl and Andrea.
"Any luck?"
Andrea shook her head and snapped the light off before Daryl aimed a kick at a piece of cracked asphalt.
"No, Rick said that he told her to keep the sun on her left shoulder but her trail just...vanished into nothing. Carl got shot and some bitch rode in on a horse and took Lori with her so the others followed- we came back here to get the others and head that way in the morning. She knew Carl's name so someone must have sent her."
Daryl looked at me and jerked his chin to the left so I waved goodbye to Jay and let Daryl pull me by the wrist a few cars down the road, night bugs were croaking and chirping and it was a nice hum to my ears; the full moon was out high in the sky and it made me want to giggle. Ironic, no?
"You good?"
He turned around and basically buried his face into the top of my chest and gripped both of my hips tighter then he had earlier that day; I couldn't tell wether he felt defeated or he was just tired like everyone else felt-
"....just give me a minute."
I patted at his cropped hair with my left hand until he kissed my skin and lifted his face up so I could see the blues of his eyes, his face dirtied and there was a faint smell of blood in the sweat that was dried to his skin.
"Er...I saw your mess on the way out of here...you missed one."
I lifted my shoulders in a shrug and his gaze dropped down to the dipping neck-line again, bits of a small breeze were making the thing feel drafty in all the wrong places.
"I tried to get them all but I couldn't snag the one- I know this thing's a bit open but my eyes are up here you know."
"Mhm...I know."
Daryl looked back over his shoulder at the lit up RV further on up the road before he turned back and cupped both of my breasts in his too big hands; he squished them together and pulled them apart gently until they were mostly free of the thin white fabric.
"I have a...proposition for you if you'll hear me out.."
I motioned to his hands groping me and snorted.
"A bit too late to ask, but go ahead."
"We're gonna be hella busy looking for the bratty kid...and we might not get to have alone time like this again for awhile..do you want to do that with me?"
I nudged his hands away from my chest and pulled at the thing until I was covered up agaiin and pointed to the darkest part of the forest where another light was slowly coming through the trees, Daryl's face screwed up in annoyance when it got close enough for him to see and it made me chuckle.
"Look, I know that you want to but I'm not having my first time be up against some dirty car- I don't have many standards but that's just one of them. Patience, ok?"
*
"How is he?"
"Better, but he's still asleep. The bullet splintered off into little bits in his abdomen and it looks like there's some internal bleeding...but we managed to slow it down enough so he should heal just fine. No sign of Sophie on the way in?"
An entire day had passed and most of us had gone to the farm into the next night but Daryl still hadn't shown up yet, he was still out in the unknown looking for Sophia but Jay and I had stopped to report to Rick when the sun went down; Rick said that Hershel was kind enough to let us stay until Carl was able to move around on his own.
"None, not even for us."
I folded my arms over my chest and scuffed a bare foot on the peeling white paint of the porch and chewed on my lower lip, Jay was close behind me but his eyes never left the door to the main house for too long.
"Damn..well, I really appriciate what the both of you have done for us so far, looking for her all day and I'm sure Carol feels the same. Have you thought about where you're gonna sleep? I think everyone is going to settle down in the front yard for now if you want to join us."
"Probably somewhere in the woods for me, big crowds really aren't my thing."
Jay clapped me on the left shoulder before he walked off into the dark and left me to balk on the spot after him, an awkward silence left in his wake.
