The next four days included concerts each night. Ellen and Mike didn't get much time together, but she called him every evening before leaving for the venue. She missed him much more than she'd anticipated, those beautiful eyes looking into hers, his large strong hand entwined with her own, his laughter, his wit, and that decidedly sexy Texas drawl.
There was a noticeable distance between she and John now. She'd been dissatisfied for a little while in small ways already. How often he seemed far away, his mind unreachable, dimmed by all the marijuana he'd been consuming. And there were the other women she was fairly certain he'd been with even though he'd been quite careful not to let her actually catch him at it.
Most of all she'd begun to crave a bit more stability, something more 'normal.' Dare she think it? Perhaps she had even begun to consider what it would be like to be in a relationship that might include a future, marriage, children. With John that seemed as far away as ever. She did believe he loved her, but was that simply enough anymore?
Lennon had always been able to read her. And so it was now. He became more attentive, romantic. He gave her a different gift each day, wrote pages of love notes to her and slipped into her bed earlier each night to stay with her, make love to her. Before the last concert of the tour at The Cow Palace in San Francisci he even pulled her into a secluded area backstage and took her hot and quick, standing up.
Neither was he finished with her. That night as they lay in bed after sharing a cigarette he pulled something from the bedside table drawer.
"George and I have done this a couple of times. It's amazing. Let's do it together."
"What is it John?"
"LSD."
"What's it do?"
"It's a hallucinogenic. It expands your mind. You see things you can't even begin to imagine. It's like being in Wonderland."
"How long does it last?"
"A few hours. I'd be with you the whole time to guide you through it. Please Luv I want to share this with you."
He ALWAYS wanted to share whatever new experience he'd discovered with her to be as close to her as possible. In the end, just as she invariably did, she agreed to do it.
He took his then placed hers on her tongue for her, lay her down on the bed.
"It'll take anywhere from twenty minutes to a half hour." He held her close, kissed her. "I've been wanting to find out what it's like to have sex during a trip. I'd like you to be the one I experience that with."
"Me?"
"JUST you. I think it'll be incredible."
He took off his pajamas, slipped her nightgown over her head. "If you experience anything you don't like during the trip tell me right away. I want this to be good for you. I love you Ellie."
He went down on her first as he usually preferred to do while she fellated him then lay down behind her, made love to her slowly, easily to help her transition into the effects of the drug.
She knew exactly when it happened because suddenly every sensation seemed enhanced. Sounds were clearer, colors brighter, the feeling of John moving inside her nearly euphoric.
"God, it's even better than I thought it would be," he rhapsodized. "Are you okay?"
"It's beautiful John. Don't stop. Don't stop."
They changed positions so that she was lying facing him her leg over his hip. It was as if they were one person now, one flesh. She could literally SEE their bodies melt into each other. All time became irrelevant as well. Neither of them had any idea if ten minutes had passed or ten HOURS.
They made love in every position their expanding minds could imagine, each one feeling brand new. EVERYTHING was brand new as if this were the first time they'd ever been together.
When it was finally over, and she was lying in his arms, she felt as if she were floating in a sky filled with stars that glittered like diamonds, John's heartbeat like some primordial lullabye lulling her into a peaceful, dream-filled sleep.
