"Okay, baby boy, sit down right there while I get you signed in alright?" Velda addressed Dakari as they walked into the doctor's office. The air in the psychiatric office waiting room carried the faint scent of a clinical air freshener, attempting to mask the sterile undertones of the medical environment. The soft hum of fluorescent lights illuminated the space, casting a bleak glow on the colored chairs arranged neatly in rows. A subtle hint of flavored water lingered in the air, a token attempt to create an atmosphere of calm. Velda, accompanied by thirteen-year-old Dakari, entered the waiting area. The colored chairs, each adorned with an air of impersonal comfort, provided the only semblance of warmth in an otherwise clinical setting. As Velda approached the receptionist desk to check in, Dakari hesitated, his nerves apparent as he took a seat. Faint sounds of a child's tantrum echoed from a neighboring room, unsettling Dakari further. A little girl, about his age, across the room caught his eye, offering a small smile and wave, to which he awkwardly responded in the same matter, waving back. Velda approached the receptionist desk, a sense of concern etched on her face as she prepared to check Dakari in for his appointment.
"Good morning! How can I help you today?" The receptionist looked up from her computer, a genuine smile on her face. Dakari glanced over from where he sat, watching his mother curiously.
