Chap summary: It's time to bring the first book of the 'Insomniac' series to an end. But underground heroes always go out with a bang. And on a Monday morning, with four hours' worth of classes canceled, 1A and 1B get to learn what truly separates limelights from undergrounds.
Shota feels alive.
He's glad Eutha offered to go into the ring yesterday, he feels refreshed in a way he hasn't been in a while.
He stayed in the ring for three more rounds, pulverizing anyone who went against him, and he remembered why he always enjoyed it so much. The rush of pure unrestrained life flowing through his veins couldn't be gotten anywhere else. A safe, regulated environment where you can fight as if there's no tomorrow.
It's relieving.
He felt at home listening to those who were watching and cheering, he finally felt like he belonged after three relentless years of teaching at this hellhole of a school.
But...
There's always a but.
Afterward, he came back into the meeting room where Sonomi told him that Onyx had spoken with Hound Dog who'd requested a speech on underground hero work, saying that he didn't think they'd be as intent listening to Shota since it'd be more like an everyday lecture.
Onyx wouldn't be available and Hound Dog had brought up the fact he wanted multiple perspectives.
So Onyx (the idiotic genius) had offered to send their best four, Aki and Asashi, along with their legend: Potus. (A reason for him being called a genius, he already knew that Shota wouldn't share his alias with the school.)
He'd been surprised when he was told that but he was fine.
Currently, he's shaking slightly.
Nothing noticeable, he's seated in his chair in the staff meeting room as their guests walk in. Except he's a part of both groups and is only physically present for one.
Nezu welcomes them, gesturing to the empty seats where they all immediately settled in.
Yokami's here and they'll know. If by some miracle they don't, Emiko will . He sighs, rolling his eyes in boredom as he flips through the pages. Not a single expression is visible on any of their faces and Shota can practically feel the room chilling in their presence.
Snipe raises a finger, pointing right at Kenji. "You're the one who dropped Shota off a few weeks ago?"
Kenji gives a soft hum, gets elbowed by Sonomi, and then corrects himself. "Yeah, that was me."
Nezu hums, "Kurofox? I couldn't find much on any of you other than the files held by the HPSC."
Kenji grins widely. "As to be expected, Potus makes sure all information on us is wiped." His face fell, turning serious. "It would be a shame if quirks as delicate as ours were exposed, wouldn't it be?"
The stoat hummed and Shota sent Kenji a glare.
"Where's Potus?" Yokami asked, an eyebrow raised in suspicion.
Kenji bursts out laughing, Keitaro covers his face as he snickers, Aki starts giggling, Asashi raises both his eyebrows in a manner that says: 'the audacity', and Emiko is laughing so hard she lowers her head to the table as she chokes slightly.
Shota himself is suppressing his laughter, not from Yokami's words but from their reactions.
Sonomi, the only one whose composure will at least allow her to speak clearly, answers him with such sarcasm and mockery in her tone Shota might evaporate. "You think Potus, someone so renowned in the underground he is believed to be nothing but a myth, has time to be sitting around in here doing nothing when the average underground hero barely does?"
