After listening to Natalie's summary of the Avast mission in his study, Aleph held his brown softstone so close to his beard that he almost set it afire.

"Treasure . . . pirates . . . armies," he repeated. "This has the makings of an excellent adventure novel."

"One with less Matarian wine, unfortunately," Natalie lamented. "I went back to my room and showered after working out with Jake, and the only thing I have in my kitchen on the Indy to eat or drink is UEF-approved military meals. They're worse than the lunches I used to get at Brightman."

"Brightman?" Aleph asked.

"My old high school," Natalie explained, forgetting that Aleph didn't know everything about her life on Earth. "We used to joke that the lunch ladies would just sit on frozen cafeteria food to heat them up because the microwaves never worked. And if there were brownies being served, only the bravest of students took a piece."

"If only I could have been there to pack you some meals, I would've baked you a loaf of Bakleurish banana bread," Aleph fantasized. "Mm. It's like eating a warm, sunset cloud."

As if on cue, Natalie's stomach rumbled. Aleph lowered his softstone and stroked his beard.

"Avast is a most intriguing place," he pondered. "It's home to more than just pirates, as you might've already guessed. It's also the setting for many legends and tales."

He pocketed his softstone and wandered over to his voluminous bookshelves.

"There's one legend in particular . . ." he muttered as he scanned the spines of his books. "Ah! Here we go."

Aleph gently retrieved a book from its perch. Judging from the cloud of dust that fell from the shelf, Natalie assumed the book hadn't breathed air in many years, even in the dream world. Aleph rolled his chair to Natalie and opened the book. It was entitled, The Lost Elemite Tales — Volume 2. He flipped the yellowing pages until he came across a vivid painting of a UEF fleetship in front of a golden backdrop.
