Natalie dreamt she was engaged in a savage duel with a fire-breathing cloud, but she was very much perplexed. Weren't clouds made of water? How did this one breathe fire?

Her eyes adjusted to the dark interior of Star's bedroom. It was just her and Yona floating in between the bunk beds. A mismatch of furniture was awkwardly propped up against the door.

"Yona?" Natalie croakily asked. She winced upon touching dry blood on her forehead.

Yona held up her fingers. "Shh," Natalie heard in her earpiece. "We might not be alone."

Natalie rubbed her hands across her body. Everything was where it was supposed to be, except for one thing. Natalie immediately fidgeted with her collar.

"Where's the pennar?!" she frantically asked.

Yona lowered her missilor and tried to calm her friend. "It's not here," she said, grabbing Natalie by the wrists. "I looked for it everywhere. It's gone. So's Ador."

"Wha . . . where's Ranger? Where's Ador? And . . . where's Jake? What happened?"

"We're hundreds of miles away from the Whipping Waves," Yona answered. "Ranger surrendered to the Mandata so they wouldn't find us. I don't know where Ador is, and Jake—"

"Was on the Independence . . ." Natalie remembered. "And the Samson—"

"Exactly," Yona finished. "You hit your head when we were attacked."

Natalie grabbed hold of the bunkbeds and sat upright. "How long was I out?"

"Three hours," Yona reckoned. "I tried contacting the UEF half an hour ago, but nothing's working. Whatever signal they were using has gone dead."

Natalie slowly came to terms with her present circumstances. She drew on the little bits of Sentium that she could use on her own to see Star from the outside.

"We're alone," she observed. "Star doesn't look too good."

"Can you see the kitchen," Yona asked. "Is there any water?"
