One week later
"Nothing Chemotherapy and Radiation can't fix" my father says, obviously trying to brush it off.
"I'm not going to listen to you. You sugarcoat everything. I'll talk to the doctor myself" I say standing and making my way to the door.
"Mio figlio, please sit down." My mother, who is constantly trying to cool the heat between my dad and I speaks.
"Mama, he's not telling me what's wrong. I've asked him 3 times already and he keeps avoiding the question." I say.
My dad was doing great and just when I thought he was fine, I'm told the cancer came back. I would ask my mother if she could tell me, but she's always trying to make things seem better than they actually are. So there is no way in hell I'm listening to her sugarcoat this more than my dad already is.
When I got the news that my dad was taken to the hospital, In a fucking ambulance might I add, I had to leave everything and rush here. Which meant coming in sweat pants and a T-shirt. Not exactly what I'd like to wear out, but I didn't want to waste time.
So imagine my frustration when i got here and don't get any information about his illness.
"Don't waste your time with the doctor. He is not allowed to tell you or anyone anything" my dad said, shifting in the bed.
"Wanna bet?" I ask him with no sense of humour in my eyes. My father knows me better that anyone else. I might not want to become the don, but deep down, my father knows that I am worse than he is. I am literally capable of anything and the look in his face right now gives me satisfaction enough.
"Vincenzo, I did not raise you to be this way" my mother says walking towards me.
"I don't get it mom, what is so hard about letting us know. We are not kids anymore." I say.
"Come with me" my mother says leading the way out. I could hear my dad grunt in disapproval but my mom doesn't care. It's crazy to see a dangerous man like him have a soft spot.
"Look, baby. It's not terrible. The doctors said we are lucky it didn't spread as much as they thought but he will need surgery." She goes on to explain how it's going to go better than last time and that the surgery is much less risky.
"What?" I whisper.
Surgery.
My heart aches at the thought. Mostly because we almost lost him last year when he went into surgery. Wait, we actually lost him for a whole damn minute before the doctors brought him back.
My head starts spinning and I can't think straight. He can't go through surgery again. I don't know when I sat down in one of the couches in the waiting room but I'm brought back to life when my mother gets a hold of my hand.
"It's going to be fine" she whispers. I stay there for a few minutes before I finally stand on my feet.
"I have to go" I say giving her a kiss on the cheek.
My mother sighs in response. She knows that anything she says right now will not register in my head so she doesn't say anything. I've been at the hospital since 4am and it's now 8am. I have to get freshened up and get a few things done before I come back here. Most importantly, I need to go for a run, better yet, I need to hit something.
When I walk into the house, I head straight to the kitchen to get some water. Noticing Jimmy made breakfast, wait, Jimmy never makes breakfast. It must be sweet Kath. She's been spending a lot of nights here with him. Can't say the same for my baby Louise. Mostly it's my fault because I've been busy all week and also avoiding her.
