Enzo

Earlier in the day.

"Dad, this is my work of place. You're not allowed to come here and talk about your business" I growl, resting my elbows on the desk before me.

"You mean the family business" he says, leaning comfortably in the chair.

I sigh in response.

"We have talked about this. I told you I can not be the next person in line. We agreed Rico will take over" I say, my voice barely above a whisper.

"And I keep telling you. That boy can't do it. He doesn't have leadership and business skills like you do" my father spits out.

"Isn't that why you sent him to business school? So he can learn?" I ask.

"My point exactly. He went to school for it but you're a natural. You're always ahead of the game, constantly evaluating the risks." He pauses sand stands from his chair.

"It's not every day you get a capo who doesn't have to be molded. You have a chance to be the greatest Mafia boss and you are passing it out because you're selfish?" He says, his voice deep and gravely.

Okay now I know he's just pushing me. I have to remind myself that this man is my father before I lash out on him. Taking a deep breath in and out, I look at him.

"Listen dad, I'm grateful you appreciate my strategizing skills, but this is not something I want, and it's damn well not negotiable." I say calmly.

"Vincenzo, just one job."

"No dad.... This job you're asking me to do, is undoubtedly a thrilling ride but I don't want it. I am worse than you. You know that, we both know that. Do you realise what being the boss would turn me into? A fucking monster!." I whisper yell.

He opens his mouth to saying something but a Knock at the door stops him.

"Come in" I say to the person behind the door.

"I have a delivery for you sir" my assistant, Michael says nervously.

"From?" I ask

"Dr. Martin" he replies.

I cannot stop the smile that tugs on my lips at the mention of her name.

"Okay" I say after clearing my throat.

"Bring it in" Michael says to someone outside the door.

My father and I watch a young man bring in, only the best chair I have ever laid my eyes on. The latest luxurious ergonomic chair. This is a large purchase, and one that didn't reflect to the card I gave her. I honestly don't care how much she spends on herself on my bill. But I can't believe she used her own money to get me this chair.

"It came with a little card behind the chair" Michael explains.

"Thank you Michael, you can go"

"You're welcome sir" he replies. I reach to the back of the chair and pull out a little envelope. Inside it, a small card, handwritten...

"It's supposed to be the most comfortable chair, at least that's what it said on the internet. Regardless, I hope it reduces the back pain..."

Forgetting my dad is watching me, I pull my phone out and shoot my baby a text.

Me: I love the surprise baby. Glad to know I was in your mind long enough to earn a gift"

She responds just a few seconds later with a smiley emoji and a text.
