The Witch

There was so much blood. All I could see was that shed. My parents dead inside. And the shadowy figure of death standing before them.

I felt numb.

The Reaper had set me down against a wall, finding a candle to light with Azura's lighter before setting it in front of me.

"I know it's stupid to even ask, but are you alright," the Reaper asked softly. "How are you feeling?"

I just shook my head wordlessly.

"They had us clocked the moment we stepped through the front door," he sighed. "My initial suspicions point to Delilah being their informant."

A sudden laugh escaped my lips. "You think?"

"I'm sorry," he said quietly. "This is my fault."

"I'm worried about Sam," I swallowed. "If Delilah is the informant and he's left alone with her—"

"He'll be fine," he said reassuringly. "He's a smart kid. And ruthless. He can handle himself."

There was something so familial with how he talked about Sam. But he had only just met Sam a little less than a week ago.

"Still," I breathed. "He's alone. If anything were to happen to him—"

"Don't think about that," he said softly. "Try to stay focused. You can't make sure he's safe if your dead."

I nodded. "I know."

He undid his bow tie and shrugged off his jacket, placing it carefully over my shoulders.

"There's something else that's bothering you," he said under his breath.

I shook my head. "It's nothing—"

"Coralynn," he said firmly. "You can't hide things from me."

I let out a low growl. "I said it's nothing."

His jaw tightened, but he found his place beside me against the wall. He rested his forearms over his knees casually as he leaned his head back against the stone wall. He sighed heavily, shutting his eyes in exhaustion. Then he swallowed softly, throat bobbing as he did.

"My mother's name was Melantha and she was the single most important thing to me," he said quietly.

I frowned slightly, looking over at him. Was he actually going to get personal with me right now?
