The Witch

I had fallen asleep again. Not very wise considering the circumstances. There wasn't enough time to lay around and find enjoyment in his arms.

At least his eyes were closed this time. His breathing was stable— mostly. Every once in a while, I feel his body lock up around mine. I tried to gently ease his spasms with a light soothing wave of calm.

Disappointment flooded me when it didn't work. I kept trying though. Maybe it would break through that impenetrable wall of agony he had made himself.

But it continued. This was merely a small crumb of evidence of what Hecate had done. The physical wounds were already nearly mended. There was almost nothing left of his suffering on his skin.

All that was left was trauma. Even when he smiled it was like there was barely any life in him. His skin was like paper, so easily torn. It made me scared to even touch him. I just wanted to hold him without this fear of hurting him again.

Hecate would fucking pay for that. She'd pay for every single time his body froze from instinct. She'd pay for every nightmare he'd endure, every flinch—

"What's got you so worked up this early in the morning," he mumbled, nuzzling his face into the side of my neck.

I loosed a breath. "Nothing," I answered. "I'm fine."

He let out a breathy laugh, lips curving against my skin.

"Your pulse is racing," he whispered. "And your skin is damp— you're burning with something and I don't think it's your sheer lust for me this time. Otherwise you would have started to work your magic on me."

Fuck. He always could read me like an open book.

I groaned. "Do continue to piss me off," I muttered sarcastically. "I really enjoy it."

He hummed softly in thought. The sound made electricity run across my skin.

"That's the best thing anyone has ever told me, little witch," he chuckled. "I'll make sure to find every single one of your precious nerves just to make you happy."

A reluctant smile drew across my face.

"I'm sure you'll have no problem with that either," I laughed softly.

He quieted from behind me, shifting his body so that he could reach to turn my face to look at him.

"What is on your mind, Coralynn," he asked softly, his eyes searching my face. "Talk to me."
