The Witch

Levi and Sam were beside me as we concealed ourselves in the crowd outside the Tower. Broken helicopters lay in pieces just within the barricades. The sound of people buzzing with gossip filled my ears.

I could hear the panic... and the awe in their voices as they discussed their eye witness accounts of what they had seen.

"He fucking sprung wings, mate. I can't make this shit up. The bastard was flying."

"What if those assholes upstairs sent him to finish the job?"

"The Celestials couldn't give less of a shit about us. I doubt it."

"He took out five heavily armed assault craft. He's not friendly—"

"We wouldn't be having this conversation if it was an angel, dumbass. We'd be dead."

"Speak for yourself. I got a bone to pick with those feathered motherfuckers."

"Our best bet is to incite chaos," Sam whispered towards me. "We could slip inside undetected and gain direct access to the six."

I turned to Levi for his thoughts, but his eyes were shut. I could see how they shifted beneath his lids as if searching his mind for something. A moment later they opened and he inhaled deeply.

"If this is happening we have to do it now," he said grimly. "It's begun."

His words sent ice skittering down my nerves, but I tightened my jaw and shimmied towards the two demons still going at it with their theories on who had done this incredible and terrifying feat.

It wouldn't be hard to make excuses for why I would bump into him. We were jammed together like sardines in a can. So I feigned a careless trip, falling against his back. I made quick work of it, only to make it look natural and clumsy on the outside.

Inside, I wreaked havoc on his mind. Pushing every hateful and spiteful thought this demon held into the part of his brain that made him act on those deadly impulses.

"Sorry," I squeaked, pulling back into the crowd.

Within moments, the sound of two people shouting began. Then I heard fists connecting with flesh. More shouting ensued. More fighting.

The crowd grew restless around me. Bodies became more impacted, squeezing me in tighter.

Oh, god. This wasn't a good idea at all. I was still at the epicenter of this battle royal.
