A Promise

The pro-bending arena got shut down after Amon's attack and I haven't had anything to do since. I roll out of my bed and pull on some clothes.

My short walk leads me back to my favourite or at least, most visited restaurant, Narook's Seaweed Noodlery. I sit down in the far corner, away from where I would regularly sit with Tahno and Ming.

I order a pot of jasmine tea and when they place it on my table, I notice a man sitting slumped over a few tables over from me. A very familiar man.

I grab my pot of tea and move to his table, sitting down and pouring two cups, "Tahno." He looks up at me, "You look horrible." I comment. His eyes are sunken and his hair is messy.

"Thanks." He mumbles and sips his cup of tea.

"How long have you been here?"

"Probably all night. What time is it?" He looks around, dazed.

"He really took your bending away," I state bluntly. He nods his head slowly, "I've been to every doctor Republic City has. Whatever he did to me. Is permanent."

"You may not be the best person. And I might not like you. But not even you deserve this." I take a small sip of the hot tea in my hand.

"You left Ming and I... In the arena."

"There was nothing I could do... Not without getting caught a second time and losing my bending too. You know that."

"Yeah..." He sips from his cup, "Yuko."

"What?"

"Find the Avatar."

"Why?"

"So she can help you find Amon, and you can punch him in the face with a flaming fist for me." He places his cup down on the table and looks at me with a small spark in his eyes.

"Why don't you just ask the Avatar herself? I don't need to do her dirty work."

"I did but... I thought I could trust you to do it. I guess I was wrong." The spark that was momentarily within him has now died away.

"Yeah... You were." I stand from the table, placing a few bills down, "Go home and get some rest, Tahno."

I spent the day in the park, training. Of course, in a public area like that, I'm not allowed to train with my fire but I can practice bending movements and combat techniques.

It starts to rain as I am heading home. I pull my jacket over my head, but it doesn't stop the water from soaking me down to the bone. My body shivers as more and more cold water hits me on the back.

"Hey, lady!" A man's voice calls to me, "Looks like you could use some help." An older man with a patchy beard appears at my side, "You could stay the night at my place," He leans in closer, "It'll be nice and dry." He smirks, "You won't need to worry about your clothes."

I grimace and face away from him as I speed up my pace. I really don't want to have to deal with this right now.

"Come on! Just one night!" He touches my shoulder and this crosses the line for me. I throw my jacket to the ground, my hands steam as the rain hits them, "I didn't mean any trouble." The man stammers as my hands start to glow with blue flames.

"Oh, really." I step closer to him, "I've already had a pretty bad day. So I suggest if you want to live until tomorrow you turn around and go back to your 'dry home."

He runs in the opposite direction from me as fast as he can, tripping a few times along the way.

I stoop down to pick up my jacket, but someone else beats me to it. A pale hand picks it up and offers it to me. When I look up, I meet the eyes of a person I had seen just a few hours earlier. The sick and sunken face of Tahno.
