I kick a ring of flames at Tahno and he blocks it with a wall of water. He splits apart his wall and charges the two blobs of water at me. I duck and roll to the ground, avoiding both blobs.
I drag my leg across the floor in a crouched position and a blade of fire knocks Tahno off his feet. With one last burst of flames, he lands outside the border of our training ring. I crack my neck and back, "Maybe next time, you'll actually get me to lose my footing." I taunt and he just grumbles.
"The Fire Ferrets are playing tonight," Tahno changes the subject once he gets back on his feet, "Are you going to watch their match?"
"I don't care about their stupid match." I wipe the sweat off the back of my neck with a towel, "All I care about is our own match."
"We will be fighting them in the finals, maybe you should study them a little more."
"What makes you think those amateurs will make it to the finals? I doubt they'll even make it past the quarter-finals." I state, stretching out my legs.
"They'll make it to the finals for sure. But they have no chance of beating us."
"So, why do I have to study them then, if we already have the match in the bag?"
"Shut up!"
-
"And it's a total knockout for the White Falls Wolfbats!" The announcer yells
We exit the ring with the cheers of our adoring fans and go to the changeroom, "You almost made us lose that last round!" Tahno points at my chest aggressively.
"I'm the one who won that match! If it weren't for me, you would both be in the water right now!" I roll my eyes at him.
"You are a selfish little-" I interrupt Tahno by shoving him aside and walking out the door, "Are you sure you're not talking about yourself?" I turn back and look at him.
"Do you want to stay on this team?" He growls.
"Yeah, whatever." I wave my hand lazily, "I'll see you at Narook's later."
"Yuko-"
"Goodbye, Tahno!" I call, not even turning to look at him.
The walk to Narook's Seaweed Noodlery is calming for my head. I take a long way there so, once I arrive, Tahno and Ming are already seated in their regular spot, a table full of food in front of them.
"Nice of you to actually join us." Tahno greets me, rudely.
"I'll never miss a chance to eat a meal that is being paid for by someone else." I sit down next to Ming. I notice that Tahno's eyes are trailing to someone on the other side of the room. Avatar Korra.
After holding a short staring contest with her, Tahno stands up and of course, Ming trails on his heels. I sit alone for a second before getting up from my seat to follow him as well. Tahno walks straight up to the Avatar's table which she happens to be sharing with one of the other members of the Fire Ferrets.
"Well, well, well, if it isn't the Fire Ferrets. Pro-bending's saddest excuse for a team. Tell me, how did a couple of amateurs like you luck your way into the tournament? Especially you, Avatar. You know, if you'd like to learn how a real pro bends, I could give you some private lessons." Tahno taunts and I quietly scoff at him.
Korra stands from her seat, "You wanna go toe-to-toe with me, pretty boy?"
"Go for it. I'll give you the first shot." Tahno smirks.
The Avatar's partner whispers something to her and instead of hitting Tahno square in the face, she whistles. The window behind her busts open and a large polar bear-dog reveals itself, roaring loudly. Tahno falls over, but Ming catches him at the last moment and drags him off to our table.
I stay unmoving, "You're going to have to try harder than that to intimidate me, Avatar Korra." I turn on my heel and join the two boys back at our table, "Nice work, Tahno." I say sarcastically, slumping down into my seat.
"Shut up, Yuko."
"Gladly." I pick up my stuff from my seat, "I'm going home." I step away from the table.
"You have to chip in." Tahno's voice orders. I stop walking, "That's not how this works."
"Do you want a spot on this team?"
I reach into my pocket, grab a few coins and chuck them at Tahno, "Enjoy your meal." I deadpan and leave the restaurant.
-
"Miss, dinner has been prepared for you. As you like it, of course." The maid that cleans my hotel room explains.
"I'm not really hungry." I hang my jacket on the hooks on the wall, "Let those in the kitchen eat it. I'm sure they'll enjoy it."
"Uh. Of course, Miss." She takes the platter and speeds out of the room, leaving me alone once again.
I walk to the window and admire the lights of Republic City. Getting lost in thought, I stare out the window for what must have been an hour. I step back and get ready for bed.
I have a quarter-final match tomorrow. I should be well-rested.
-
"It didn't seem possible, folks, but the Fire Ferrets are headed to the finals!" I hear the announcer yell.
"Yuko," Tahno calls to me as we head down the hall towards the changeroom, "Try not to throw the match this time."
"We won because of me. Or have you forgotten that?" I retaliate.
"We'll win whether you participate or not." He pushes past me and enters the room, "Ooh, oof. You guys smell something in here?" Tahno waves in front of his nose dramatically, "Wait, I know what that is; yeah, that's the scent of losers."
"Shut up, Tahno." I slap him on the back of the head, "The only thing that smells in here, is you." That earns me a glare from the man.
"I hope we see you in the finals. Then we'll know who the losers really are." Korra says to Tahno with a frown.
"Yeah, I'm peeing my pants over here." Our idiot of a team captain jeers as we walk to the bridge leading to the arena.
I pull my helmet over my head, cracking my shoulders and my back as the announcer calls, "And now, the defending champs, the White Falls Wolfbats!"
The bell rings and I instantly start berating the opposing team with attacks. Tahno from beside me blocks an earth disk from hitting me in the face while I was distracted by two of the opposing team members. I thrust my fist out and a large plume of flames pushes the two men past the first line. Within seconds all three members of the opposing team have been pushed to the edge of the arena.
"This is it for you!" I jump forward with one last blast and two of them tumble off the edge. Ming takes one last earth disk and projects it into the face of the last person remaining. Giving us a total knockout.
"Your winners, the Wolfbats!" The announcer cheers and I raise my arms in victory, "With a brutal round one knockout, the defending champs secure their spot in the finals. I don't know where they found their new member, but she's definitely carrying the team this season! I hope the Ferrets know a good doctor, 'cause they're gonna need one!"
"You did it again!" Tahno complains as I take off my suit, "What? Help you win?" I taunt.
"This isn't your team. It's mine. Remember that next time!"
"Whatever, Tahno." I pull my bag over my shoulders, "You'll be thanking me when I win us the finals."
