TW: Talk about Sex, Catholic Beliefs, Implied Sexual Abuse
"Hunter," Mariam said as she walked up the stairs to their house. "Can we talk?"
"Sure," Hunter said, turning to face his fiancée.
"You've been distant...I just wanted to make sure you're not...you know, cheating on me?" Mariam asked.
"What?!" Hunter asked, shocked and a little hurt by the question. "No!"
"Then why have you been distant?" Mariam asked.
"I can't tell you...it's family related," Hunter said.
That statement hurt Mariam. "I'm family, aren't I?! I'm marrying you in 2 months!"
"Look, it's nothing serious—"
"Then why can't you tell me?!"
"Look, I can't do this," Hunter said, trying to unlock the door. "Not now. Let's just eat dinner, okay?"
"No, I think I'm gonna have dinner at my mum's," Mariam said before walking off.
Hunter tried to stop her, but she pushed past him. She got in her car and watched Hunter unlock the door and walk inside, the lights flickering on. She was about to drive when she felt cool metal against her throat. She gasped, looking at the person who held a knife to her throat through the mirror in the car.
"Niko."
Niko was the guy who wanted to marry Mariam, but she didn't love him.
"Scream and it won't end well," Niko said.
"What do you want?!" Mariam demanded, putting her brave face on.
"Break up with him," Niko said.
"He's my soon-to-be husband! I would never!" Mariam said.
"Do it or his blood will stain this knife. Once you break up with him...you'll marry me," Niko said. "If you don't marry me, I'll also kill him."
With that, he got out of the car and left her to her own thoughts.

When Hunter had got the text saying Mariam wanted to talk, he had been surprised. He came outside their house that morning to find her standing there.
He smiled at her and went in to kiss her, but she pushed him away.
"I can't be with you."
Those words surprised him and crushed him at the same time. "What?"
"I'm sorry," Mariam said. "One of the vows of marriage is to never keep secrets."
"Okay, look. Crosshair got into some illegal activity and got arrested! He didn't want people to know!" Hunter said.
"It's not just that. Someone told me they had proof that you were cheating on me," Mariam said.
"What?! I never cheated on you!" Hunter said.
"Then explain this!" Mariam said, shoving a picture of him with a woman, kissing her.
"That's not what it looks like. She came up and kissed me! Out of the blue! I pushed her away!" Hunter explained, tears forming in his eyes.
"ENOUGH EXCUSES!" Mariam yelled. "I'm done. You can have the ring! Goodbye Hunter!"
Mariam yanked the ring off her finger and threw it at Hunter before leaving. Had watched her drive away with tears streaming down his cheeks.

Omega walked over to Hunter, wearing a fancy dress. Her smile faltered when she saw that hd wasn't dressed up.
"Hey! Why aren't you dressed up for your bachelor party?" Omega asked.
"It's not happening. I texted everyone saying it wasn't happening. Everyone except you because I knew you were coming here to pick up Mariam for her bachelorette party," Hunter said.
"What happened?" Omega asked.
"She called the engagement off," Hunter cried.
"Oh Hunter," Omega said, sitting next to him, hugging him tightly.
"She kept saying how I cheated on her and how I kept secrets! Which is not true!" Hunter cried, looking at his sister.
"So show her that! Don't give up!" Omega said. "Honestly, stop feeling sorry for yourself and do something about it! Clean yourself up and get your butt to her door!"
"I don't even know where she is," Hunter said.
"She's at her mum's," Omega said. "Her mum just told me that."
Hunter nodded and went to clean himself up.

Hunter knocked on Mariam's door, the ring in his pocket and his heart in his throat. Mariam's mother answered.
"If you're looking for Mariam, she's at the hotel," the woman said.
"Thanks," Hunter said before running off.
———
When he got to Mariam's room, he was about to knock when he heard shouting. She wasn't alone.
"No! Stop Niko!" Mariam's voice sounded. "I'm not having an affair with you! I agreed at break up with Hunter and marry you so you wouldn't kill him, not have sex! Plus, you know I can't have it until I'm married anyway!"
"What?" A man's voice sounded from inside the room. Hunter presumed that was Niko.
"It's my religion!" Mariam said.
"Ugh. I can't believe that brat put up with that belief," Niko said.
"Hunter is Catholic too, you idiot!" Mariam said.
"Listen, I don't care for your rules. You abide to mine. What I say, goes," Niko said.
"Unhand me!" Mariam cried.
Hunter had heard enough. He walked a fair distance away and called the police. About half an hour later, they arrived and arrested Niko.
When Mariam walked out, she gasped at seeing Hunter and the tears started pouring from her eyes. She ran over and hugged him.
"Hunter, I..." Mariam started when Hunter shushed her gently.
"Thank you for saving my life...I understand why you did what you did," Hunter said.
"Can I still marry you?" Mariam asked.
"Honey, you don't have to ask," Hunter said, beaming as he slid the ring back on her finger and kissed her passionately.
Mariam smiled and knew they were going to be fine. Love was all they needed.
Just in case you didn't know, yes...this was a Modern AU.
