Third person:
Nick and Charlie were determined to support their twins, Oakley and Lily, in every possible way. When Dr. Thompson suggested learning sign language to assist Oakley with his hearing impairment. They eagerly embraced the idea. They ordered books, watched online tutorials, and even enrolled in a beginner's sign language course.
Excited to begin, Nick and Charlie started practising signs at home, their fingers tracing shapes and movements in the air.
Oakley and Lily, being six months old, could only coo and babble, but Nick and Charlie were hopeful that sign language could be a bridge for communication until they could speak.
As they sat on the floor with Oakley and Lily, Nick and Charlie began teaching them simple signs for basic needs like "milk" and "more." Oakley seemed intrigued, his bright eyes following their movements with interest. However, every time they tried to teach Oakley, Lily's coos turned into cries, her face contorted with frustration.
Lily watched with growing envy as Oakley received all the attention. Her little heart felt a pang of jealousy as she saw Nick and Charlie lavishing praise on her brother for mimicking their signs.
She wanted to be the centre of attention, too, but Oakley seemed to steal the spotlight every time.
Frustrated by her inability to express herself like Oakley, Lily's cries grew louder and more persistent.
She reached out for Nick and Charlie, her tiny arms outstretched, begging for comfort and reassurance.
Concerned, Nick scooped Lily up into his arms, trying to calm her down.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" he asked, his voice filled with sympathy.
But Lily continued to cry, her tears soaking Nick's shoulder as she buried her face against his chest. Charlie knelt down beside them, rubbing Lily's back soothingly in an attempt to ease her distress.
"It's okay, Lily. We're here," Charlie reassured her, his heart breaking at the sight of her tears.
Despite their efforts to console her, Lily's cries only intensified whenever they focused their attention on Oakley. Feeling torn between comforting Lily and teaching Oakley, Nick and Charlie exchanged worried glances.
"Maybe we should take a break for now," Nick suggested, his voice tinged with concern. "Lily seems really upset."
Charlie nodded in agreement, gently rocking Lily in his arms. "I think you're right," he said, his heart aching at the sight of Lily's distress.
With a heavy sigh, Nick and Charlie set aside their sign language books and focused their attention on comforting Lily.
As they rocked her back and forth, murmuring words of reassurance, they couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt for neglecting Lily's needs in their efforts to help Oakley.
But deep down, they knew that they were doing the best they could for both of their children.
And as they held Lily close, surrounded by the warmth and love of their little family, they vowed to find a way to support each of their children equally, no matter what challenges lay ahead.
