He Who Hesitates

Just a little update. I'm still depressed and so sad about what happened this week, and I still have yet to hear from him. His phone still goes to voicemail and my texts still go through, but he still hasn't made contact with me, and I have no way to reach out to his family or anything to see if he's at least okay. I'm trying to have hope that I wasn't stood up, but I can't believe that it wasn't just a weird coincidence.

Simon's Point of View:

"Hello?"

"Is this Samuel Jennings?"

"Speaking."

"Chief Detective Finley with Belfry P.D. on account of Simon Riley. He's quite upset with you. Says he got roughed up pretty good while under your roof and now he's suing." I lied, desperate to conceal my natural British accent into an American one in order to catch this bloke on my line.

"He was one of the biggest guys in there. Highly doubt he got roughed up." Jennings scoffed.

"Well, he was your prisoner and I'm not losing my job over this. Is there somewhere we could meet and get our stories straight before lawyers start snooping around?"

"How about tonight at the Bear Tooth Bar?"

"What time?"

"Seven."

"You got it."

The other line went dead, and I knew that Jennings was going to try and pull something on me with how he acted on the phone. Perhaps he knew I wasn't really Detective Finley, or maybe he thought I was, who knew. See you soon, jackass.

I sat in my patrol car on the side of the road as it was my duty for a good portion of my day to make sure people weren't driving like it was the bloody Autobahn, shaking my left leg up and down impatiently as this was the worst part about my job, but I still wouldn't trade it for anything as it was the closest thing I could get into that wasn't the military.

Suddenly, a distinct ringtone I had reserved for only one person filled the air. Kiera's beautiful face appeared on my phone screen, instantly lifting my spirits. Eager to hear her voice, I swiftly answered the call. "Talk to me, love."

"This isn't Momma..." chimed Evie's voice. It was the first time she had spoken to me on the phone by herself, catching me off guard, yet I was equally thrilled to hear her voice.

"I figured that," I chuckled. "What're you up to?"

"I was just reminding you about the tea party you told me you were going to have with me."

I forgot I told her I'd have a little tea party with her later, bloody hell.

"I remember. No need to remind me," That was a lie. I'd be ashamed for her to know that I forgot about accepting her invitation to her first tea party after she begged for a teacup set from the store. "Where's your mum?"

"She's making me and brother something to eat."

"Are you and Jacob being good for her while I'm away?"

"Yes, but I need to make sure I reminded you of what you promised, because if you forget, I'm going to be mad at you, daddy."

I snickered at her boldness, "Yes, ma'am."

"I'm not an adult, daddy. I'm not a ma'am."

"Then what are you, then?"

"I am your angel and the best little girl in the world." She giggled.
