The Reaper Calls

"Ladies," Langston sneered at us, looking down at Charlene and myself as we were cuffed to an iron bar in the far corner of their make-shift factory. He then pointed to me with his cane, "Here's where we are: your husband is out looking for her coward of a husband. It might be a while, so stay comfortable." He then looked down at not only my twins, but Charlene's children as well, who were also unfortunately cuffed to the same iron beam as us, and Stella was lazily put into my lap, yet it killed me that I couldn't coddle her as she cried.

This was no place for a child, and our children were going to be traumatized. All because of me. I couldn't protect them, and now they're living in hell Simon and I promised to keep them out of. "Your daddy has caused us a lot of problems, you know that?"

Charlene's children cried as they shook their heads, and mine inched as close as they could towards me. Then, he gestured for three of his men to begin unlocking the cuffs that bound them while one snatched Stella from my lap. "No!" I cried. "Don't do this!"

"Hush, now, they'll be somewhere safe as insurance things go smoothly. If not, then it'll be a shame if they were to fall into one of those chemical tubs..." He shrugged. "Have you thought about the fact that if you or your husband wouldn't have put your noses into this, none of it would've happened?"

"He was doing his job, and you killed my mother! I'm not just going to mourn and move on!"

"That's for certain," He scoffed. "Your mom got too close. She knew the rules. If she wouldn't have walked in on Steve that day... poof! None of this would've happened, soldier."

"You'll see soon enough the reason why I survived those deployments." I grumbled.

"I'm not scared of you, little girl."

"Prove it. Prove it by uncuffing me right now. Couldn't even take a punch from this little girl before that grapefruit of a nose started bleeding," I insulted, pleased that he ignored my mocking and walked away, leaving Charlene and I to drown in our worry. "That's what I thought."

"You're going to get us killed, Kiera!" Charlene cried.

"No, I'm not. You need to get your shit together," I encouraged. "I'm terrified, too, but we can't let the enemy bathe in the assumption that they're winning."

"They-They're going to kill us!" She whimpered. "They're going to kill our children, Kiera!"

"Hey, listen to me, no they're not! It's an intimidation tactic to keep us cooperating. You have to trust Simon on this. He is not going to let up until he knows we're safe. Sometime before six a.m., he's going to come knocking, and they're going to wish they never started this fight."

"I'm bored," Deputy Dixon sighed, her feet propped up on the desk after she had taken out her anger on Finley, using the fact that he was in handcuffs to her advantage. "Maybe I'll uncuff you for a while and make the fight more interesting."

"Do it, then." Finley sighed through a bloody lip, raising his arms to accept her offer.

She smirked before shaking her head, "Awe, is someone texting you, Captain Finley?" She cooed; her eyes fixated on his phone. "Don't worry, I'll get it for you." She hummed, now standing to her feet and walking towards the holding cell that sat in the open area of the front lobby.

"Nobody texts me unless it's important." Finley replied, knowing that it could only be one person, and it was the one person he never thought he would be relieved to hear from given their rough start.

Simon

"Giving out your number to randoms?" She scoffed, furrowing her brows as she expected it to be someone she would recognize. "Duck and cover. What the hell does that mean?"
