"Nightlock is a poisonous berry that is found on the outskirts of District 12 and what used to be District 13. If ingested, it can kill a person before it even reaches their stomach."

"Correct, Ms. Seymour," the teacher smiled at the girl before turning to the boy who sat right beside her. "It is not, Mr. Odair, a 'gun safe that locks at night'. I would understand this confusion if this lesson were taking place at the academy, however, young man, we are in an edible plants classroom."

Carolina Seymour turned to watch as the boy slumped down further in his seat with a small smirk on her face. She would've felt bad for him if she were sitting anywhere else, but sitting right beside him gave her a perfect view of his notebook.

Instead of writing down any notes, the boy had decided to draw a very detailed picture of their teacher with devil horns and fire for eyes.

If it were any other teacher, Carolina might have laughed or even joked about it with him. She was a hard teacher, after all.

However, her mother being depicted as such is not quite as funny.

Seriously, the girl thought to herself, this isn't even a required course. If he's not interested in the subject, why bother taking the class?

Carolina rolled her eyes at the sight of the drawing, but before she could say anything about it, the bell rang, signaling that the school day had ended and each student was to head to the academy.

As always, Finnick Odair jumped out of his seat.

It was no secret that Finnick preferred the academy to regular classes. Easily, he was at the top of their class at nearly every weapon, especially when it came to using a trident. So whenever Carolina saw the boy in the gymnasium with a trident in his hand, she would pretend to be sick to avoid being put up against him in a fight. The fights at the academy may be supervised, but that didn't stop kids from going home in slings every day.

Before Finnick could finish packing up, Carolina grabbed her water bottle and poured it on the boy's awful drawing. She may have feared him at the academy, but being at the school gave her undeserved confidence.

"Oops," Carolina feigned shock. "I am so sorry, Odair."

"What the hell, Seymour," he quickly grabbed at the damp papers, which were all crumpling in his hands immediately.

Again, she would've felt bad. It was only one bad depiction of her mother, right? The rest could've been important, like notes for other classes.

Wrong.

As he flipped through the now soggy pages of his notebook, she did not see a single page that had actual words on it. But, she did see one, two... seven pages that showed depictions of herself. They were all melted into a mess, but no doubt the drawings were not in her favor.

"Completely my fault, Seaweed Brain," Carolina apologized insincerely, "You are welcome to borrow my notes if you want. Though, I don't have any drawings of my mother as the devil."

Finnick scoffed, making a scene of grabbing all of the papers, stomping over to the trash, and throwing them in.

The other students in the class paid no mind to Carolina and Finnick. It was nothing new for them to be arguing about one thing or another. After being in class with the two for nine years, everyone had learned to ignore it.

Everyone except for Pearl Meadows, District 4's resident gossip.

"What happened today?" Pearl asked, looping her arm through Carolina's.

Pearl Meadows had been Carolina's best friend since they were four when Pearl practically demanded they be best friends. Since then, the girls have been inseparable. The two girls did everything together, whether it was Carolina helping Pearl with her assignments or Pearl telling Carolina the latest gossip. Pearl had always found a way to remain by Carolina's side.
