Comet's POV:
"This is it", Miss Skullnick said as the three of us stood in front of the cave entrance. Even though it was dark inside, you could see that whole cave was littered with socks of different materials, sizes, colors and patterns. I took a deep breath, took Star's hand, and we walked inside the cave behind Miss Skullnick.
The deeper we went, the darker it got, but I soon saw a small flicker growing as we came closer. It seemed to be some kind of flame...
"Oh my gosh", I breathed out when we arrived at the backside of the cave. There on the walls, all of our classmates were, stuck in large socks over a large fireplace. While Star and I were baffled, Miss Skullnick, surprisingly, did not seem fazed at all. She was really good at putting up with strange and new things.
"Kids, don't worry, we're going to get you out of here and go home soon", she said, fully back in responsible-adult-mode. I shivered when I heard the roar of some creature in the distance. Judging by it, it was very big. And hungry.
"Okay we have to hurry", Miss Skullnick urged, and turned to us. "Is there any way to help them float down?"
"Of course, of course", Star assured. We took a step forward, and both raised our wands, casting a spell that engulfed our classmates in a light pinkish hue and raised them from the socks. I concentrated on putting them down as gently as possible. The spell was already advanced, but with so many people, it was impossible to even dare loose concentration. When Jackie, the last on finally reached the floor safely, I let out a breath of relief. Star wiped the sweat from her forehead.
The students all started to whisper and chatter quietly amongst each other as they were put back on the ground. "Quiet! It's coming!", Miss Skullnick ordered.
Just then, a monster, a bigger version of a Knitting Monster, entered the cave with a loud roar. The students screamed in unison, pulling its attention. Star went in front of us with a determined face, pointing her wand at its face. "Alright String Monster-!"
"No! I'm back in charge!", Miss Skullnick exclaimed, interrupting Star, "I need you two to get those kids to safety!"
Before any of us could complain, she picked up a huge boulder like it was nothing. Astounded, we didn't move. Miss Skullnick looked back at us. "What did I say?! Go! Go! Go!"
I snapped out of it, grabbing Star's hand and running to the cave entrance. "Everyone! Keep up!"
We all ran out of the cave and to the bus without slowing down a bit. When we arrived, I skipped to a halt, breathing heavily. Worried, I turned back to the cave to see where Miss Skullnick was. From the bus we could all see her putting up a good fight with the monster. Star let out an impressed whistle. "Skullnick has really got some moves", she remarked.
Just then the Monster managed to swallow Miss Skullnick whole. The students screamed again in horror, and Star and I aimed our wands at it. "Get ready to eat magic!"
But before we could cast a spell, Miss Skullnick climbed out of the bundle of strings that was its stomach. In her hand she held a paper clip and the end of the monster's string. She looked over to us. "Get the bus moving!"
We spent no time all climbing into the bus. "Drive, now!", Star yelled, and the bus driver obliged. Star and I popped our heads out of the open bus door, watching as Miss Skullnick ran after the bus, fastening the string to the paper clip and the clip to a post with the writing, 'The Universe's Most Immovable Post.'
"Miss Skullnick! Grab on!", Star yelled through the wind, and we each reached out a hand to help her on board. As soon as she was inside, we closed the doors. The monster roared, giving chase. But with its one end already tied to the post, it only disarmed itself before reaching us.
"That's how you do it!", Miss Skullnick victoriously grinned. The class cheered happily and the bus came to a stop. "Miss Skullnick rules!"
Miss Skullnick seemed very surprised, and for just a second, I couldv'e sworn I saw a small grateful grin on her face. But when I blinked again, the smile was gone, as if it had never been there in the first place.
"Alright, everyone! Get into your places. And no more cheering!"
The class went quiet and calmly sat down in the seats with their friends. "Comet, wanna sit next to each other again?", Jackie asked. Star quickly butted in. "Sorry Jackie, I'm already taking the seat next to her. But you can ask Marco!"
With a grin she pushed Jackie towards where Marco was sitting and pulled me to a few rows further back. We watched as Jackie approached Marco. "Hi Marco, is someone sitting next to you?"
Marco looked at her, then to us. Star nodded eagerly and I raised both thumbs with a smile. Marco turned back to Jackie. "Yes. You are."
The ride back was a lot calmer. Everyone was completely exhausted from this field trip. Star was leaning against me as I mindlessly scrolled through my interdimensional mirror.
Suddenly, a small ping announced a new message. At the top of the screen, Tom's name lit up, before disappearing again.
"Tom?" Star suddenly perked up, reading the contact, and looked at me, "I didn't know you had his number."
Flustered, I flipped the mirror shut. "Uh, yeah... He gave it to me once..." "Really? Hmm." Star looked out of the window, seemingly contemplating something. "I don't know if it's such a good idea being friends with him..."
"Come on Star, you're just saying that because he's your ex...", I argued.
"No, I'm saying that because we both know that he has anger issues, and I don't want you to get hurt by him", Star said, looking at me with a mix of seriousness and worry. I was very touched by her statement and smiled a little.
"I understand. I promise Star, I'm careful. You know Tom would never try to hurt someone on purpose", I tried to reassure her.
She sighed, and turned to look out of the window again. After a moment, she turned back to me, smiling too. "I suppose you're right. But just so you know, if that jerk ever hurts you in any way, I'm going to personally deal with him."
"... Okay."
Star sighed with a big smile, leaning against me and closing her eyes. Soon she was fast asleep.
I flipped the mirror open again.
