Comet's POV:
I sighed as I watched the two of them pedaling away. I went back inside, suddenly not in the mood for reading. I pulled out my portable mirror, thinking of maybe talking to someone.
Mom and Dad we're probably busy, Pony Head was still at St. Olga's, and probably busy leading the rebellion, and then there was Tom. My eyes lingered on his contact. I was hesitant to call or text him. What if I was disturbing him or he didn't want to talk?
With a resigned sigh I shut my mirror with a clap and went to the kitchen to take one of the bags. I went upstairs to gather the books I had to bring to the library.
"I'm going out to the library", I told Mrs. Diaz, who was in the backyard, taking care of her flowers and cacti. "Alright sweetheart", she said, "Is Marco taking you with him? He has his karate class not far from the library."
I shook my head. "He and Star have already headed out", I explained. Mrs. Diaz seemed surprised, probably wondering why they hadn't taken me with them. "Okay then, have fun dear, and call us if something happens."
I was looking to the ground as I walked towards the library. Even though it was only spring, the temperature today was incredibly high. I saw kids playing on the streets of the neighborhood, while their parents were enjoying the nice day in their backyards.
The sky was free of clouds, a beautiful azure color. The sun was standing in the southwest, shining proudly down on Earth's surface.
What a beautiful day... I wonder what's it like at home? It's been a few days since we talked with Mom and Dad...
I wonder what Star and Marco are doing now?Probably goofing around and having fun... I sighed again. I didn't know why, but I felt somewhat deflated knowing my sister and only friend on Earth were having fun without me. Even though I myself decided no to come along.
I hated not knowing why I was feeling this way. Why did it have to be so confusing? Being an over thinker is exhausting... It's like I have such a clear image in my mind but cannot find the words to accurately describe it... And every time i want to take a closer look the image starts to blur, and I'm stuck in my spot, not able to iterate my thoughts...
Before I knew it, I had arrived at the library. It was a sweet building, only two floors high. It had a pale yellow facade, and from the window sills upstairs, green vines descended. I opened the small door and slipped inside. After having given back the books I went upstairs to find some new books to read. Preferably fantasy.
As I scanned through the shelves, I suddenly heard a voice from behind me. "Hey, Comet right?" I flinched in surprise and turned around.
Jackie was smiling at me. "I don't think we've formally met", she said, "I'm Jackie. I share History and English courses with you."
Ah, where was Star when you needed her? I felt my cheeks heating up in embarrassment, unsure what to do. I hadn't expected to meet someone from school here...
"Umm... I'm Comet. You like reading too?", I mumbled, only to blush even more. Of course she likes reading, otherwise she wouldn't be here! And she already knows your name, why'd you tell her again?
Jackie didn't seem to mind. "Only sometimes", she replied, "I'm surprised to see you checking out Earth's fantasy books. I would've assumed you and your sister would find them... Boring? Since you're basically from a magical dimension yourself."
I tried to smile a little. "I don't think so, they're very different from home", I explained, "It's amazing what you humans can come up with."
I pulled a book from the shelf, thinking the conversation was over. "Ooh, that one's good", Jackie said, suddenly bending over my shoulder to look at the title. "You've read it? What's it about?", I asked. "Umm..." Jackie seemed to think of a way to describe the story without spoiling too much. "It's about a girl who goes to her aunt's place for the summer. And there the girl starts having encounters with another girl that doesn't really exist." She looked at me and smiled bashfully, "Sorry, I don't know how to tell you what it's about without spoiling the story. But I promise, it's really good."
Jackie continued to tag along as I continued picking up books for me to read. At first, I was hesitant to talk to her unless spoken to. She honestly hadn't seemed to be the sort of person I would have a lot in common with. But the more we talked, the more comfortable I felt. I was surprised by just how fast she had gotten me to open up. She was very kind and easy-going. No wonder Marco has a crush on her...
When we finally left the library, nboth with a new stack of books to read, she asked, "Sooo... Would you like to go eat ice cream with me?" She had put her borrowed books into her backpack and picked up the skateboard leaning by the wall. "I know a good place down the street. My treat."
I smiled bashfully. "If you don't mind, I'd love to." And so, she and I headed to the ice cream parlor together. Jackie was slowly rolling down the street on her skateboard next to me. "You're a lot cooler than I thought", Jackie said, "I guess still waters run deep."
I didn't know exactly how to react to a compliment like that. But I felt happy, so I smiled and replied, "You're cool too, Jackie."
When we arrived at the parlor, Jackie was the first to choose her ice cream flavor. "What do you want, Comet?" I pointed at the flavor I wanted to try. Something called mango.
"Oh, so sweet", I mumbled in surprise. Jackie herself had gotten lemon as her flavor. "Yeah, they put a lot of sugar into their ice cream. I hope it's not too sweet", she said. "No, it's fine. I actually really like it", I assured.
Halfway back we both finished our cones, and soon, we came to a cross, and Jackie and I had to part ways. "Thank you for today. I'll pay you back on Monday, I promise", I said. Jackie shook her head. "I told you it's my treat didn't I? And I had a lot of fun to. Let's hang out again some other time."
She pulled out a black fine liner from her backpack and grabbed my wrist. "Here, my number. Then we can decide on a day and time." It tickled a little as she scribbled her number on my wrist. With a grin and a final wave, she skated away. I smiled and waved too, before crossing the road and slowly walking up the streets to Marco's place.
