RABYA
“Adhrit.” I called out his name as soon as we entered inside our room.
He turned to me. “Yes.”
“What would you like to have for dinner? I'd tell the cook to prepare it.” I said, feeling a little burst of happiness throughout my chest.
His brows creased in confusion but he did his best to mask it. “Uh, you can ask Reha about what she'd like to eat.”
I shook my head. “No, you tell.”
“Anything.” He said.
“Okay.” I smiled and was about to leave the room when he his voice stopped me.
“Rabya, is everything alright?”
“Offcourse.” I shrugged and humming one the songs he hears at night, I walked to the kitchen.
“What's for the dinner?” I asked the house helpers while adjusting my veil. “Will you please make paneer parantha?” I added, remembering that Reha likes to eat it.
“Saheb is very angry.”
The whispers of helpers caught my attention. “What happened?” I couldn't help but ask.
“There's this man who took all the jewelleries of his wife and put them as a bet on gambling. His daughter is about to get married next month but now it's all ruined since he lost every single penny. That man's wife came to Saheb and started crying—”
I didn't bother to let her complete the sentence and stormed out of the kitchen. The noises from the main hall made me stop in my tracks and I hide behind the wall but when I saw the scene infront of me, my eyes widened in disbelief. Adhrit held some man by his neck, the pad of his thumb pressing against the pulse as the man struggled for air.
“Motherfucker, you dared to put your own daughter as a bet on gambling. I'll fucking kill you.” Adhrit's murderous voice made me flinch in fear.
The man's wife folded her hands and begged Adhrit to let him go. “Saheb, I know he was wrong but he's my husband. It'd be impossible for me and my daughter to live in the society if he dies. He's the only man of our house, where would we go without him?”
Nausea hit me hearing her words. She's pleading for that pathetic man who almost sold his daughter just because he's her husband? From whom is she going to save herself and her daughter? From that regressive society who's going to exclude them just because they're not under the shadow of the man of the family? But then what about the monster inside her own home?
Adhrit let out a sharp breath and thrashed him aside. He snapped his fingers and one of his servents came forward with bundles of notes which he threw at the man. “Take this money bastard and pay off your debt and if I hear you doing something like this again then I'm fucking going to tear apart your body into shreds.”
He bend down to his level and then grabbed that man by his jaw. “All I've to do is to snap my fingers and my men are going to kill you in minutes.”
