ADHRIT

"Hey, man." Agastya forwarded his hands to greet me.

"I've to travel seven hours to come and see you. You're very well aware about it yet you called me." I said.

"It was important regarding the latest land deal." He passed me a tight smile.

I pulled the chair and sat across him.  Shuffling through the paperworks, he handed me a piece of paper.

"What's this?"

"Read yourself."

"Pardon me for failing my twelfth boards." I gave him the paper back.

He rubbed his forehead and then laughed. "Right. You're grumpy because?"

I breathed out. "I'm married."

"You're what?" He raised his brows in suprise. "But I didn't get the invitation."

"I know. Everything happened in a rush."

"So? How's your married life treating you?" He asked.

"What about you?"

He smiled. "Okay, I guess."

I opened my mouth to ask him about Zoya but then decided not to. "She's younger."

"Okay."

"She's ten years younger than me, Agastya. Fuck, I don't know how to explain it." I sighed in frustration. "And like a predator I was about to sleep with her on our wedding night."

"Did you not ask for her consent? Hold on— you can't be this dumb." He narrowed his eyes but when I gave him no reply, he cleared his throat. "Fuck."

"I thought we were supposed to consummate our marriage on first night." I spoke.

"Did you apologise?" He passed me the glass of water.

I shook my head. "She's young and cries herself to sleep. I don't know how to deal with her."

"Try talking to her."

"You're really a great help."

"No need to be sarcastic. But why did you marry her? As far as I know, you spent half of your youth running away from the marriage." He asked.

"I had my reasons." Her mother begged me to marry her, how can I say no to that.

I wonder what was going through the girl's mind when she got to know that her father committed suicide for not being able to afford her marriage? It must be hard on her. She might be blaming herself. Last night when I told her about what her mother said to me, her face scrunched in both pain and shock and then I heard her crying herself to sleep. I can tell that she was trying hard to not let me know about it but her harsh breathing and occasional cough made it clear. Honestly, I didn't know how to react. I laid awake whole night thinking that at such a young age she has to carry the pain of her father's death on her shoulders. Death is devastating. After all, who knows it better than me?
