RABYA

"Saheb, forgive me."

"No, you should've thought before." I halted on my steps when I heard Adhrit's voice echoing from the other side of the hall.

I forrowed my brows together as curiosity piqued in me and I couldn't help but hide behind the walls and see what was going on. Pulling the veil to my head, I pressed the side of my face to the wall and tried to figure out the scene in front of me.

Adhrit sat on the couch with his one leg resting on another. His arms crossed above his chest as he stares at the two men infront of him who stood on the floor on their knees with their hands folded together as if they were begging him for something.

I looked around to see couple of more villagers in the room who stood at the corner.

What's happening here?

"Saheb...please forgive-"

"Shut the fuck up. You ruined someone's agricultural field just because he wasn't able to pay off his debt to you." Adhrit snapped.

I flinched at his sharp voice. My eyes landed on his face and I was shocked to see nothing but anger. It felt weird because I've never seen him like this before. Not liking the atmosphere, I covered my face and was about to walk back to the kitchen when I heard the women of village on the corner whispering about me.

"Saheb is going to make that man pay for his mistake. But isn't it too much? The man's wife had an affair with the farmer's son. Maybe that's why he did that."

"You're right after all which man is going to tolerate his wife bringing shame upon his name? That woman should be punished. It all happened because of her."

"Saheb, is not going to punish her. He's already becoming modern. Haven't you heard, how he asked his wife to sit on the breakfast table next to him?"

"It's not his fault. He was nothing but kind to our village. We all know him very well. But his wife, I'm telling you that woman is very clever. How shameless one could be to sit without taking her veil in-front of all the servants?"

"I've heard that she never talks to anyone. I wonder why Saheb married her? He was getting marriage proposals from very big people yet he chose her."

"It's his honeymoon period, let him enjoy and then we all know what happens next. One slap from him and she'll get back to her senses."

Nausea hit me in my stomach and without wasting any other second, I rushed back to my room. Dread settled in my heart as the words of those women repeated in my head over and over again.

Which man is going to tolerate his wife bringing shame upon his name?

One slap from him and she'll get back to her senses.

What if Adhrit gets to know about my past? Is he going to hit me? But I told him on our wedding night that I'm not virgin and he didn't say anything about it. If the people of this village gets to know about me then I'll be the one to bring shame upon him, right?
