RABYA

I pushed saliva down my throat when I felt the bed dipping beside me. More sweats broke out and fear latched onto me.

I opened my mouth to say something but then pressed my lips together remembering what my Aunt told me that I should never deny my husband for anything, that he has complete right over my body after our marriage.

I held my breath. It's okay, Rabya. Just close your eyes and it'll not hurt.

"Slide down your veil." I heard his dominating voice echoing into my ears.

I nodded. With shaky fingers, I clutched my veil and pulled it down. The warm air from the fan hit my sweaty face like ice water. I wanted to sigh in relief but then I fixed my eyes on the bed which was decorated with the rose petals. My stomach nauseated.

He switched on the air conditioning and as the temperature started decreasing in the room, I started sweating profusely when he came closer. He removed my nose ring and then his hands touched my bare neck as he struggled to remove gold jewelleries from my neck. His cold, calloused fingers touched my drenched skin and I held my breath not being able to digest it. I know it wasn't his fault, I was rather served to him on platter but I couldn't help despising this man.

He's ten years older than me. Someone like him who's both rich and powerful should've found a girl of his age, not me.

After he was done with my jewelleries, he held my hands and started removing my bangles. My hands were shivering, I was trying my best to hold back my tears. Slowly, he undid my blouse. I felt like throwing up. I tried to hold back my tears but when he was about to unhook my bra, I shirked away from him.

I burst out into sobs and folded my hands infront of him. "P-Please...."

"You don't want to do it?" He asked.

Fear crept through my senses and I clenched my eyes shut. "I..I..." I breathed out. I shook my head. "No, please...I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

But the second I married him, my fate was already sealed. He started unbuttoning his Kurta and pulled it over his head. My heart sank deeper when I realised that he was going to force me. More tears gathered in my eyes and I've never felt this helpless before. Like a moth burning to the flame, I would be burnt into misery. He will—

"Cover your body." He demanded, passing me his Kurta.

I dragged my eyes to look up at him. He was staring back at my face. Realising that he was naked, I took it from his hand and quickly wore it. He stood up to grab another Kurta from his wardrobe for himself.

"Were you forced for this marriage?"

"N-No, I wasn't." I replied in a heartbeat, scared that he might hurt my family if he thinks otherwise.

He sat on the edge of the bed and ran his fingers through his hair. "What's your age?"

"Twenty four."

"Were you aware about my age?"

I nodded at his question.

"Then why did you say yes for this?"

I looked down at my fingers which were coloured in Henna. His name was imprinted on my hands and for a moment, I wished to scrub my hands with soap till it disappears the faint smell of Henna which was taunting me. Taunting me that now I'm married. The girl who was trying her best to fullfill her dreams ended up being bound to the shackles of glass bangles, the vermillion in my head and a nuptial chain around my neck. But then again what's the meaning of those dreams now when my Baba is no more?

“What's your name?”

I blinked at his question. “Rabya.”

“Are you sure you're not lying to me, Rabya? You can tell me if you were forced—”

“No. I-I'm not lying. I just miss my p-parents.” I whispered.

He sighed. “I heard that your father died recently.”

Needles prickled in my throat at how easily he said those words as if they don't weigh anything. For me, the death of my Baba meant the loss of my own life. He just didn't die, he took a piece of myself with him.

I nodded.

“Your sister didn't attend your marriage?” He asked another question.

“She was unwell.” I lied.

Truth to be told, she despise me so much that she said to Maa that she'd rather kill herself than to be at my wedding. She didn't even want to see my face after what I've done to her. I've snatched her freedom from her.

“Take however time you need to adjust. I will not touch you without your consent but I hope you're well aware that this marriage demands certain responsibilities from your end. This isn't a big city, Rabya. If you don't get pregnant within a year then the whole village is going to talk about you.” He stated in a hollow voice.

I played with my bangles and then slowly nodded. The discomfort arising through my chest at the thought of getting pregnant, again.

“You can sleep on the bed, I'll take the couch.” He said.

“Okay.” I mumbled.

He was about to turn the lights off when I couldn't help but speak. “Will you hit me if I tell you something?”

He snapped his head to me. “I don't hit women.”

I pushed saliva down my throat and opened my mouth to say but then nothing came out of it. I was scared.

“Are you in love with some other man?”

I started coughing at his question and immediately shook my head. “No. No, I'm not. I swear it's nothing's like that.” I muttered, clenching the bedsheet in fear.

“Then?”

“I'm n-not virgin.” I confessed.

He raised his brows in disbelief and then rubbed his palms all over his face. “Okay.”

“Okay? You're not going to h-hit me, right? Please, don't hurt me. I-I'm sorry.” I begged.

“As I said, I don't raise my hand on women, Rabya.” He stressed on his words.

I bit on my lips to stop the urge of crying infront of him. I don't believe him.

“Can you—” He hesitated. “Don't tell about this to anyone. This must stay between us.”

I nodded, meekly.

He switched the lights off and then lay down on the couch. I stayed still for awhile before I decided to sleep. I kept on tossing and turning, forcing myself to sleep but all in vain. My heart was not calming down a bit. The blunder I've done by telling him about myself is making me anxious. I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow? He won't question my family about this, right? Maa will hate me more.

“I'm not disappointed. You don't need to worry about anything. I asked you not to tell this to anyone because I don't want anyone to disrespect you. I presume you lived most of your life in metropolitan city but the situation here is completely different. I hope you understand.” He said.

And with that I don't know when the sleep engulfed me.
