RABYA

I dragged my eyes to the wall clock and then back to Adhrit's phone which was lay on the couch. Biting my nails in anticipation, I tried to recall that at exactly what time he returns but when I get nothing, I quickly took his phone and dialed Reha's number. She disconnected the call thrice before finally picking up.

"Now what, Rabya?" She spoke in an irritated voice.

"What the doctor said? Is her reports normal or-" I swallowed down my words.

"Did your husband hit you on your head?"

"No." I replied, not wanting to fight with her again.

"It takes time to get all the tests done. You're an educated, independent woman, you should know about this, Rabya." She said, sarcastically.

"Will you please inform me once you get her reports?" I asked.

But without replying anything, she ended the call. I sighed, staring at the phone in disappointment. I was about to put his phone back from where I took it but then my eyes caught his WhatsApp notification with my name mentioned in it.

I don't want to invade his privacy but I'm curious. I quickly tapped on the notification and found a group chat. Clicking on the icon, I saw four members in it.

Adhrit Chauhan, Agastya Singhania, Daivik Dewan, Saad Hafiz.

I scrolled through the messages and started reading them.

ADHRIT: What's the procedure to open a NGO?

DAIVIK: All of sudden?

AGASTYA: Don't tell me you're doing this for your wife?

SAAD: Wife? Adhrit's married?

AGASTYA: Yes, he is.

DAIVIK: Fuck? And he didn't bother to inform?

SAAD: How come you already know about this Agastya?

AGASTYA: He invited me to his wedding.

SAAD: What the hell?

DAIVIK: Why were we not invited? Why only him?

ADHRIT: I didn't invite anyone. Everything happened in a rush. Now listen to me, she was telling me about hunger and poverty in India. I want to do something for her- anything that keeps her mind at ease. I lied to her that I'm planning to run NGO and she became genuinely interested in it. Help me with the necessary information. I'm going to start the NGO for education of young girls for her.

I paused reading the messages and keep it back on the couch. My heart thudded against my ribcage and something in my snapped with regret. He's trying to make things easier for me and all I'm doing is to be bitter about everything. This is so stupid, why he'd do something like that for me? Why he's like this?

He's going to open the NGO just for me? Just because I talked about poverty?

I spent rest of the day waiting for him. And when he returned, I get up from the bed. "Adhrit." I said, planning to tell him that I've read his message and that he doesn't need to do anything for me.
