Chapter 4: Shadows Beneath the Surface

POV

“So, Mr. Kim Taehyung… how was your first day?” someone drawled with a smirk curling on their lips.

Taehyung groaned, collapsing onto the plush sofa, exhaustion etched into every line of his body. “Absolutely fucking draining,” he muttered, rubbing his temples. “Dealing with a swarm of college brats is bad enough—add math to the mix and it’s practically torture.”

Laughter followed as the others lounged on the couch, the room quickly buzzing with casual chatter.

“Nothing special on our end,” Kai said, shooting a knowing glance at Jackson. “But I do think someone here has a little secret.”

All eyes turned to Jackson, who rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide the faint blush creeping up his neck.

“It’s nothing,” Jackson said, trying to downplay it. “I just... might have a little crush.”

The room erupted in teasing smirks and raised brows.

“Who?” Seo-jun asked, comfortably settled on Eunwoo’s lap.

“J-Hope,” Jackson confessed. “Full name Jung Hoseok. He’s in my class. Charming as hell—and nice too. Just… feels good being around him, even if it was for a short time.”

“Hoseok? Isn’t he close to Jeon Jungkook?” Taehyung asked, recalling the energetic guy with the warm smile and contagious laughter.

“You know them?” Kai asked.

Taehyung nodded in silence.

“So… does he like you back?” Seo-jun pushed.

“No clue,” Jackson shrugged. “We just met. But… we did exchange numbers.”

“Alright, enough of the romance talk,” Taehyung sighed, standing up. “I’m heading to my room. Eunwoo, can you cook something up?”

---

After a long shower and changing into his usual comfort clothes, Taehyung returned to the others. They all sat down to eat, voices overlapping as they discussed anything and everything—from petty gossip to upcoming missions.

Later that night, once the dishes were cleared and the lights dimmed, they all made their way toward the room.

A password was typed. The door clicked open.

The cold air hit them instantly—an eerie stillness hung in the shadows as they entered the room. Pitch black walls. Rows of gleaming firearms. Knives of all shapes and sizes. A wall of monitors blinked in silence. The scent of steel and secrecy filled the air.

Seo-jun flipped the lights. Kai strode to the black cabinet, pulled out a stack of locked folders, and dropped them onto the table with a dull thud. Jackson added a few photos from his bag.

Taehyung sat down, eyes narrowing as the images were spread before them.

“What do we know?” he asked.

“Nothing concrete. Just scattered intel and vague descriptions,” Jackson said, flipping through the pages.

“Tomorrow,” Jackson continued, “Kai, Eunwoo, and Seo-jun will join college.”

Everyone nodded solemnly.

“We stay careful,” Taehyung said, his voice low and commanding. “We avoid law enforcement. One wrong move, and we’re exposed. Understood?”

The unspoken vow of silence echoed between them before they all rose and exited the apartment—each one disappearing into the night like shadows fading into the wind.

---

Taehyung stood in his room, enveloped in darkness.

The moonlight poured through the window, casting silver streaks across his skin. He didn’t move. He welcomed the silence. The dark had always been his shelter—a space where the ghosts couldn’t touch him. But tonight, something felt off.

There was a stirring in his chest he couldn’t quite define. This morning, when he bumped into Jungkook, the world had stilled. He hadn’t expected to see him, much less to feel the warmth of that embrace.

Just a one-night stand. That’s all it was. That’s all it should be.

And yet… the memory lingered.

He pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and exhaled slowly. Smoke curled in the moonlight like phantom thoughts.

FLASHBACK

“New mission?” Taehyung asked, voice void of emotion.

“Yes,” the old man replied. “Seoul. Tomorrow. You’ll go with your team. This one… might take time.”

Seoul.

A name. A place. A wound.

A city where everything had collapsed. The place he once called home—a cage gilded in trauma.

Taehyung nodded numbly.

“You okay, Captain V?” the old man asked gently.

No, he wasn’t. But he nodded anyway.

The man offered a rare side hug, his palm resting momentarily on Taehyung’s head.

“You’ll be fine. Just focus.”

Even though the man was cold, even ruthless at times—he was the closest thing Taehyung had to a father.

---

Back at their facility, the gym buzzed with energy.

“Captain! Got any news?” Eunwoo chirped, curled up on Seo-jun’s shoulder.

Taehyung tossed him the black file.

“Where this time?” Seo-jun asked.

“Korea,” Taehyung muttered.

The room fell silent. Everyone exchanged glances, sensing the storm brewing behind his calm expression.

“You sure you're okay with this?” Jackson asked cautiously.

Taehyung exhaled and nodded.

Later, they discussed their roles.

“I’m not being a teacher,” Taehyung snapped.

“But you said you didn’t want to be a student, Tae. What’s left?” Kai pointed out.

The thought of being bullied or provoked as a student stirred something dangerous in him—his temper was not something he could risk unleashing.

A teacher it would be, then. A bitter compromise.

Taehyung, the unapproachable math professor.

Eunwoo too would join him. The others—students.

FLASHBACK END

He stubbed out the cigarette and shut the windows.

The night swallowed the room once again as Taehyung lay in bed, mind buzzing, heart restless.

Tomorrow would be another day.

But the past never really stayed buried.
