Chapter 5: “Smoke and Shadows”
The next day...
The class was unusually tolerable—quiet even. No irritating voices, no senseless noise. But that didn’t stop taehyung’s fists from twitching. The sheer stupidity around him made his skin crawl. They couldn’t solve a basic fucking equation, and somehow that annoyed him more than usual.
He used to hate math too. But seeing these morons fumble made him feel oddly superior. At least he could solve a damn problem without crying about it.
After class, he was making his way through the hallway, heading toward his office, when a familiar face come at view.
“Hey, Jungkook.”
He didn’t stop. Didn’t turn. Just walked straight past Taehyung like he hadn’t heard a damn thing. His friends were waiting in the cafeteria, and right now, that seemed like the safest place to keep his thoughts from spiraling.
Taehyung stood there. Still. Hurt. Watching Jungkook disappear again like smoke slipping through clenched fists.
Cafeteria...
“Hey guys, I think J-Hope hyung has something to tell us,” Jimin grinned, teasing. J-Hope shifted uncomfortably under the spotlight.
“What the hell, Jimin,” Jungkook mumbled, trying to focus on anything but the ache crawling in his chest.
“It’s nothing,” J-Hope said quickly, sending Jimin a sharp glare. Jimin just smirked, devilish and knowing.
“Cut it out, Jimin. He’ll tell us when he’s ready.” Jin’s voice was calm, but even he leaned in with subtle curiosity.
Jungkook barely heard them. His mind wasn’t there.
“By the way, did you guys hear?” Jimin's voice cut through the air again.
Everyone looked up.
“There are new students and teachers on campus.”
“New?”
Jimin nodded, eyes narrowing slightly. “Something about them feels... off.”
“Stop watching crime thrillers, you weirdo,” Yoongi said, flicking a peanut at him.
It had been a week since Taehyung and his crew joined the college. So far, things were normal. On the surface. But one thing gnawed at Taehyung like a slow-burning fever—Jungkook.
Later that day...
“Hey Jungkook, J-Hope hyung’s calling you,” a classmate informed him.
“Where?” Jungkook asked, brow furrowing. Something felt off.
“Rooftop.”
He nodded, waved the guy off, and made his way up.
But the rooftop was empty. Silent. A goddamn joke?
He clenched his fists, jaw tightening. Just as he turned to leave, someone yanked him back and slammed him into the cold wall.
“The fuck is your problem, Mr. Kim?” Jungkook snarled.
Taehyung didn’t flinch. His expression was unreadable, eyes shadowed with something deeper—rage? Hurt? Jungkook couldn’t tell.
“Why are you avoiding me?” Taehyung asked, voice low, sharp.
“I’m not,” Jungkook snapped back.
Taehyung gave a humorless laugh. “And I’m supposed to believe that?”
