Chapter 9: "Crimson Triggers and Silent Secrets"
POV
"Did you find anything?" came a calm voice-low, curious, with the soft lilt of youth. The man stood by the window, watching moonlight filter through half-drawn blinds.
The boy at the desk didn't look up. Fingers danced over the keyboard with practiced speed, eyes glued to the screen.
"No... Nothing so far. Whoever they are, they're smart-careful. Slippery."
A hand landed gently atop his head, ruffling his hair in a way that made the younger frown and tilt his head back.
"Maybe so... but not smarter than you," the older man replied with a small smile, pride hidden behind his nonchalance.
The boy smirked faintly before glancing at the clock. Midnight. The world outside was asleep, but this was when he came alive.
"Why are you even here this late?"
The man shrugged, still standing beside him. "Just needed some air... and maybe a glimpse of you."
Silence followed-but not the heavy kind. It lingered like a warm blanket. Peaceful. Familiar.
One kept typing. The other kept watching.
"By the way," the man spoke again, breaking the stillness with a thoughtful hum, "Boss said Max hasn't checked in. It's been a month."
The boy froze momentarily. His fingers paused mid-tap.
"Yeah... I tried contacting him. His phone's dead. Tracker's off too."
A chill passed through the air. That wasn't like Max. He was their most reliable phantom. He never turned off his phone-never lost signal.
The older man's voice dropped, now firm. "Keep digging. We can't afford to lose him. And don't forget-tomorrow we have to show up there."
The boy gave a tired nod.
"Get some rest. If we're late, you know Boss won't spare us."
"Stop treating me like a child," the younger muttered with a pout, the softness in his voice betraying the irritation in his words.
The older man smiled faintly. His heart itched to press a kiss against that sulking mouth, but he didn't. Couldn't.
So he simply turned and left the room.

University - Morning
As usual, Taehyung stepped into class, cool and poised, greeting the students as he made his way to the board. Eyes followed him-respectful, quiet. All except one.
Jungkook didn't blink. He was entirely, hopelessly lost in him.
Taehyung felt the burn of that gaze, but chose to ignore it. As the bell rang and the room emptied, he collected his things, ready to leave-
"Professor Kim."
He turned, half-expecting it.
Jungkook stood by the door, leaning casually, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.
"What is it, Jungkook?" Taehyung asked, tone sharp with suspicion.
"Why so cold?" Jungkook chuckled. "I just want to ask you something."
Taehyung narrowed his eyes. "And what is it?"
Jungkook leaned in, lowering his voice just slightly. "Color."
Taehyung blinked. "What?"
"I want to know what color you hate most."
Taehyung raised an eyebrow. "Why?"
Jungkook shook his head innocently. "Can't tell you that."
"Then I'm leaving."
But before he could walk out, Jungkook stepped forward, blocking the doorway with his frame. "Not until you answer me."
"I'm not in the mood for your games, Jungkook."
"Say it."
"No."
"Say."
"No."
"S-"
"Red."
Both heads turned sharply.
Jackson stood at the entrance with crossed arms, an annoyed look on his face.
"Taehyung hates red," he repeated flatly.
Taehyung's eyes burned into him like daggers. Jackson gulped.
Meanwhile, Jungkook lit up like he'd won a trophy, practically bouncing toward Jackson and throwing an arm around his shoulder.
"Thanks, hyung! I'll tell you Hoseok's secret later."
Jackson blinked. "Wait-what?"
Taehyung's expression was enough to send Jackson sprinting out of the classroom seconds later.
All day, Jackson made it his life mission to avoid Taehyung's line of sight. Even Kai raised an eyebrow but didn't bother to ask. Some things were better left unexplained.

Later - At the Mall
"Why am I here, again?" Jimin asked, side-eyeing Jungkook as the two wandered through the mall.
"To help me."
Jimin rolled his eyes but continued to follow like the loyal friend he was, helping Jungkook pick out things without even knowing why. At the end of their mini adventure, Jimin was rewarded with one measly ice cream cone.
"This is all I get for two hours of unpaid personal shopping?" he huffed.
Jungkook just smirked.
"Why did you buy all that stuff, anyway?"
Instead of answering, Jungkook smirked deeper and fell silent.
Because there are ways to say "I'm thinking about you" without ever speaking your name.
