We tell our children that the value of work can be determined by numbers
and the value of a person is determined by how high their numbers are
and the quality of life is determined by how long can you keep those numbers upFor as long as I can remember
How happy you should be
was determined by the numbers given to you
Keep it high enough and you can do what you wantGrowing up
We were taught to keep our numbers high
to keep them consistent
We were told to keep it as high as we can
at all times in everything we doLike it or not
We were bound to this numbers
It determines what should we do
what can we do
And how we should do itThat these numbers determine
Who passes as somebody and who fails as a person
Who Goes on and Who stays behind
Who enjoys life and who works for a livingAnd all of these things bury what is important
That the only thing we fail by having low numbers
is the twisted standards of society
because life does not have a failing condition
Only stupid people think they failed in lifeThis is why I can never be angry at politicians
No matter how corrupt they may be
No matter how much they steal, cheat or lie
all I see is a child bound by society's numbers
burdened by the weight of society's standardsAnd even though these numbers have different names
they are all the same
Approval Ratings
Budget
Income
Grades
Salary
Debts
Revenue
Credit
Rank
Money
Scores
Sales
Allowance
QuotasThey all play different roles and wear different masks
But they are all one and the sameThey are the numbers that
Steals from us the true nature of work
Cheats us out of the real value of a person
And Lies to us about the true quality of lifeAnd though we don't directly tell these things to our children
We imply them
And though we forget sometime
That no matter what we teach our child
It is the lessons they learn by watching us
that will stay with themfor who among us would be happy if our child is falling in school because they found something they are more passionate about
who among us wouldn't be proud if our child is someone who earns millions
And who among us would let our child's future rest entirely on their hands
And that's the most saddest thing really
That we trust society more than our own childrenIf you think I'm wrong then prove me wrong
For I would prefer that I am wrong and the world right than the other way around
