CC led Izzy into her cozy kitchen. "Welcome to my humble abode," she said with a nervous chuckle, gesturing around the room. "Feel free to make yourself at home."Izzy glanced around, taking in the warm ambiance of CC's kitchen. "Thanks for having me," she replied with a small smile, trying to hide her own nerves. She wasn't used to being in such close quarters with CC, especially in her own home.
Well, except when CC had accused Izzy of stealing her dog, which felt like such a long time ago. But it was different today. A new sense of tension hung between them.
"Since it's the last day of break, I wanted to keep the hangout at home." She began gathering ingredients and utensils for the baking they'll do. "We're gonna try to bake brownies," CC chuckled, hoping that'll ease the tension still in the air. "You have to bear with me, though. I actually don't know how to cook or bake," she cleared her throat, embarrassed to admit it.
"That's fine. I've never baked anything either," Izzy joined beside her, helping her get everything organized since she didn't know where anything was in this new environment.
"So you know how to cook?" CC glanced at her. "You didn't deny not being able to cook."
"Kinda have to learn with my parents absent, don't I?" Izzy said nonchalantly. CC already knew so why beat around the bush.
CC gazed at Izzy, a slight awkwardness creeping into her expression. "Oh, right. Sorry," she mumbled, feeling a pang of guilt for bringing up a sensitive topic. "I didn't mean to... um, never mind."
Izzy shrugged, trying to brush off the awkward moment. "It's okay. Don't worry about it," she reassured her, offering a small smile. "Let's just focus on making these brownies, yeah?" Maybe if she brushed it off like it was nothing, CC wouldn't worry anymore.
"Yeah, let's do that," CC nodded, agreeing.
As they measured out flour, cracked eggs, and stirred batter, the tension in the air began to dissipate. They fell into an easy rhythm, their movements fluid and synchronized. They even had faint music playing in the background, trying to follow a simple video step by step.
At one point, CC reached for a mixing bowl, her fingers brushing against Izzy's in the process. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and CC felt a flutter of something unfamiliar stirring in her chest.
"Sorry," she mumbled, quickly pulling her hand away. "Didn't mean to."
Izzy waved off her apology with a smile. "No worries. We're working on this together, remember?"
The shorter girl nodded, a small smile playing at her lips. "Yeah, you're right." Am I the only one feeling like this? Izzy seems just fine right now. What's going on?
CC carefully measured out the cocoa powder, pouring it into the mixing bowl, shrugging off her confusing thoughts. "Okay, next we need to mix in the butter," she instructed, reaching for the butter that was already melted just right.
Izzy nodded, watching attentively as CC added the butter to the bowl. "Got it," she said, stepping forward to take over the mixing.
But as CC reached for the electric whisk machine, her hand accidentally bumped the dial, causing it to start at the highest level. Before she could react, a cloud of cocoa powder burst into the air, some of it landing right on Izzy's face.
CC's eyes widened in horror as she watched the scene unfold, turning off the machine quickly. "Oh no, Izzy, I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, rushing to grab a kitchen towel. "Are you okay?"
Izzy blinked, trying to wipe away the cocoa powder from her face with her hands. CC winced slightly. She was just getting on her good side and she just had to go and mess it up. She quickly went over, holding Izzy still as she wiped down her face.
"I'm fine," Izzy replied, her voice muffled by the towel. Despite the unexpected mishap, she couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation.
CC sighed in relief as she saw Izzy seemed to be laughing at the situation, and soon joined in, her laughter ringing out in the kitchen. "Well, at least we know the whisk works," she joked, handing Izzy another towel to clean up. "Let's try that again, but maybe this time, let's start at a lower speed."
With the brownies in the oven, CC and Izzy retreated to the cozy living room, their laughter still echoing through the air. CC had put on one of her favorite sitcoms, and they sat side by side on the couch.
As they waited for the brownies to finish baking, they chatted about everything and nothing at the same time.
"You ready for our next game?" Izzy nudged CC. "It'll be the last game together for the semester." Despite it still being three weeks from now, the taller girl couldn't help but ask.
CC grinned, a playful glint in her eyes. "Oh, I'm more than ready," she replied, matching Izzy's enthusiasm. "I've been practicing a few new moves. Can't wait to use them on you." The chuckle died down on her lips as she realized how that sounded, her cheeks flushing.
Izzy snorted, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Maybe take me to dinner first, Walker," she teased, messing with CC. She had always liked messing with her friends from time to time, and it seemed CC was becoming that person as well. Maybe she had formed a new friendship after all.
CC's cheeks flushed even more at Izzy's response, embarrassment evident on her face. She also couldn't help but notice that that was the exact thing Izzy had said when she was drunk. "I-I didn't mean it like that," she stammered, quickly backtracking. "I meant on the field, you know, during the game."
Izzy laughed at CC's flustered response. "Relax," she said, her tone teasing. "I know what you meant. Just messing with you," she flashed CC a grin, trying to ease the tension.
CC let out a nervous chuckle. "Right, right," she replied, her cheeks still tinged with pink. "Well, I'll be sure to keep those moves strictly on the field then."
"And you better not hold back like last time. Or else we'll be back to square one." Izzy's tone was light, but CC knew she wasn't joking.
"No more holding back, I promise."
The timer beeped, signaling that the brownies were ready.
And if CC jumped in joy when she noticed that Izzy finally accepted her follow request and followed back on her other social media, she wouldn't tell a soul.
