As Izzy settled into her seat, the announcer's voice boomed over the stadium speakers, welcoming the spectators to the game. "Welcome everybody. It's a beautiful day here at BMO Stadium!"Izzy felt a surge of excitement as she took in the scene around her. The sun bathed the field in golden light, and the air was alive with the sounds of distant cheers of the crowd.
Her gaze swept across the field, searching for a familiar face. And then, she spotted CC among the players, her usually confident demeanor tinged with a hint of stress.
"Come on, Unicorns!" A familiar voice came from beside her. Izzy turned to see CC's mom, Jess, making her way to sit beside her. She couldn't help but smile at the sight of her, slightly surprised by her spirited attire, all in the school's colors.
She honestly felt a bit of envy, wishing her own mother would have been like this. Izzy shook her head, shaking those thoughts away. "Hello, Mrs. Walker."
Jess raised her eyebrows, a warm smile spreading on her lips. "Izzy, please, call me Jess. Mrs. Walker makes me feel old," she said with a laugh. "Are you ready for the big game?"
Izzy nodded, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
"I've heard a lot about you from CC. She says you're one of the best she's ever played against. High praise, coming from her."
Izzy felt a flush of warmth at the compliment. "CC's an amazing player too."
As the game commenced, Izzy found herself cheering even louder for CC. She couldn't take her eyes off her, captivated by the way she moved on the field with such grace.
Beside her, Jess clapped and cheered, her enthusiasm infectious. "Go, CC! Show them what you've got!"
Halfway through the first half, CC intercepted a pass, deftly maneuvered around two defenders, and sent a shot toward the goal. The ball hit the back of the net, a sound Izzy loved to hear, and the crowd erupted in cheers.
"She's something else, isn't she? I remember when she was just a kid, always running around with a ball at her feet," Jess said over the cheers.
Izzy nodded, her eyes never leaving the field. "She really is. Watching her play is..." she felt warmth in her ears, her voice trailing off.
As halftime rolled in, Izzy caught sight of CC walking towards the sidelines. Their eyes met, and for a moment, there was a silent connection between them. The shorter girl walked closer to her as much as she could being down in the field, she cupped her hand around her mouth. "Next goal is for you!" she yelled, winking at her.
Izzy's heart fluttered at the gesture. She gave a thumbs-up, a broad smile spreading across her face. "I'll be watching!" she called back, her voice barely carrying over the noise of the crowd.
Jess chuckled beside her. "Looks like CC has taken quite a liking to you."
Izzy blushed, her eyes still fixed on CC. "It's mutual," she admitted quietly.
As the second half kicked off, CC seemed more determined than ever. In the midst of the action, Izzy's excitement grew with every play as she leaned forward, her eyes never leaving CC. When CC took a controlling shot towards the goal, Izzy held her breath, the outcome of the play feeling intensely personal. The ball flew into the sky, curving perfectly until it reached the top corner of the net.
The crowd erupted into cheers, and Izzy jumped to her feet, clapping and shouting in exhilaration. CC looked towards the stands, her gaze searching for Izzy until their eyes met, sending Izzy a look filled with pride and something else.
