The day of the game arrived, and the field buzzed with excitement as Izzy and CC's teams faced off against each other. The sun hung high in the sky, casting a golden glow over the players as they sprinted across the field, their shouts and cheers echoing through the air.As the game progressed, CC's team determination was evident in every move they made. Despite the Golden Eagles putting up a valiant effort, the Unicorns ultimately emerged victorious, the final whistle blowing to signal their win.
Amidst the cheers of celebration from CC's teammates, Izzy couldn't shake the twinge of disappointment that gnawed at her. She had poured her heart into the game, pushing herself to her limits, only to come up short in the end. Yet, as she glanced over at CC, basking in the glow of victory, she couldn't help but feel a swell of happiness for her, smiling as she watched the girl celebrate under the sunset with her teammates.
"You were good out there Izzy." Olivia jogged towards her friend. "We'll get them next semester, okay?"
Izzy smiled at her friend's attempt to cheer her up. Which worked a bit from the small compliment. "Yeah. we will."
Olivia patted her on the side of her shoulder. "It seems CC wants to talk to you." She chuckled, seeing CC standing nearby now, trying hard to not make it obvious that she's staring. "We're still on for this weekend, right?"
"Of course we are."
Olivia nodded. "I'll see you later."
CC noticed the mixed emotions flickering across Izzy's face and immediately made her way over to her. Placing a hand on Izzy's shoulder, she offered her a sympathetic smile. "Hey, you played an amazing game out there," she said sincerely, her voice tinged with warmth. "You should be proud of yourself."
Izzy nodded, a faint of pink on her cheeks. "Thanks," she replied, her voice soft. "Sorry. I know I need to work on this whole thing..." she moved her hands around her, indicating the 'lack of validation' she has. "But seriously, I'm happy for you."
CC's smile softened at Izzy's admission, understanding the vulnerability behind her friend's words. "Hey, no need to apologize," she reassured, giving Izzy's shoulder a gentle squeeze. "I know it can be hard with how you grew up," she cleared her throat. "You're doing great, Izzy. Trust me."
Izzy offered CC a small smile, feeling the tips of her ears grow warm. "Thank you," she murmured, feeling a sense of gratitude wash over her. "I mean it."
As Izzy and CC were walking off the field together, deep in conversation, they were suddenly interrupted by a familiar voice calling out Izzy's name. Turning, they saw Sophie approaching, her usual confident demeanor evident as she strode towards them.
"Izzy, you were incredible out there!" Sophie exclaimed, her voice filled with admiration. "I could hardly take my eyes off you."
Izzy's cheeks flushed at the unprompted compliment, a hint of surprise in her eyes. Sophie had said she attended her games (and Izzy did tell her about this one since Sophie wanted to know so badly) but not once had she walked down in the field to approach her. "Oh, thanks, Sophie," she replied, feeling a bit flustered by the unexpected praise.
Sophie's gaze shifted to CC, her smile widening. "And you must be CC," she said, extending her hand in greeting. "I've heard so much about you. It's nice to finally meet you in person."
CC nodded, offering Sophie a forced smile. "Likewise," she replied, though there was a subtle hint of wariness in her eyes.
Sophie then turned back to Izzy, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I was thinking we should celebrate your performance today," she suggested, her tone casual yet suggestive. "You know, like we talked about before," she said, her undertone stern almost.
