Carlisle truly hoped they wouldn't have to resort to fighting against the Volturi, but unfortunately, everything indicated that it would come to that.

Lydia also didn't want to be involved in any kind of supernatural fight; she didn't want her son to be in the midst of something so dangerous.

The arrival of Vladimir and Stefan made most of them nervous. They already knew that a confrontation was likely, but they had no idea that Aro had assembled his own army. Moreover, they had no clue what Bella might have told them, but they were almost certain that just mentioning "angel blood" and "hybrid" in the same sentence was more than enough for Aro.

They all gathered in the living room; Maven had fallen asleep and had been taken to the bedroom, so only the adults and a couple of werewolves were present.

"When Aro wants someone from a clan, he doesn't hesitate to find evidence to prove that the clan committed some crime," Eleazar commented aloud.

Tension hung in the air.

"So, has he done this before?" Lydia asked with concern.

Carlisle wrapped his arm around her shoulders.

"It happens very rarely; I never noticed a pattern."

"It seems they always forgive a person if they think they're repentant," Carlisle continued.

"That person always has an ability and is always given a place with the guard."

"I would think this is because of Alice," Edward said, "but if Aro heard about Lydia... I'm sure he went completely mad."

"But then, why does he need witnesses?" Emmett asked.

"To spread the word that justice was served after massacring an entire clan," Alistair spoke up suddenly, then left with evident discontent.

Carlisle, Edward, and Alice explained to Lydia the abilities of each member of Aro's guard. There were many with lethal powers, but they would find a way to overcome them with what they had.

Maven was lying on the couch, this time with Carlisle playing with him while listening to the conversation of the others.

"They'll do their best to block the strongest ones," Edward began, "I don't know how much they know about the abilities of the others. But I'm sure I'll be the first, then Alice, and maybe Emmett being our member with the most physical strength."

"It would be easier if we had some kind of shield," Jasper spoke from his place by the window.

"I've been thinking," Carlisle suddenly spoke up, still not taking his eyes off his son, "Lydia might be able to escape without anyone noticing. She could go with Maven, but I couldn't go with them if it comes to that."

Lydia looked at him with panic.

"Carlisle, I couldn't do that. I couldn't leave you or anyone in the family."

The man looked at her with love. Lydia noticed the slight sadness reflected in his eyes.

"Darling, understand that I'm desperate too. But if something goes wrong... I want you to run."

"I can take them," Seth's voice was heard, "if Lydia or Maven find themselves in danger, I'll take care of getting them out immediately. I'm not as fast as Jacob, but I can almost catch up."

Carlisle looked at him gratefully.

"Thank you, Seth."

Lydia got up and took her son to go upstairs to the room she shared with the blond man. She collapsed next to her son and looked at him intently from that position. She felt sad and angry at the same time. She hated everything that was happening and didn't understand why all this was happening. She didn't understand why Bella had betrayed them like that. What exactly did she gain from all of this?

The door opened, and Carlisle entered silently. He took a seat on the edge of the bed and also looked at Maven.

"Are you upset with me?" he asked softly, still not taking his eyes off his son, who was beginning to fall asleep.

"I think so. I actually have many feelings at once."

"Lydia, I love you, and I would never forgive myself if anything happened to you or Maven. You are my whole world."

She looked at him.

"And do you think I don't feel the same? Would you abandon me if I asked you to? Would you really run away with Maven without looking back?"

There was a short silence.

"No. I wouldn't."

"Then why are you asking me to do it?"

"I understand, but you must also understand that Maven can't stay, someone must protect him, and you are the only one they won't follow anywhere."

That was true, and it was also true that Carlisle couldn't run away with them when he was the one who asked most of the vampires for help.

"Lydia, promise me that if things get complicated... you'll go with Maven."

She looked at him with tear-filled eyes and finally nodded but didn't dare to say a word.

Maven had already fallen into a deep sleep.
