March, 2000

HER POV

I was very happy for my childhood friend Lakshmi today, she was finally getting married to the man of her dreams. I've known her since childhood, therefore I knew how excited she was about this wedding.

Sunaina and I were travelling our way to Somgarh village at Lakshmi's house. A week from now was her wedding. Baba, Bhaisa and others were to arrive on the wedding day so we decided to travel to her house on our own as it was only an hour or two ride and also we didn't want to miss any rituals.

"How far we are from Somgarh? How much longer?" Sunaina asked the bus conductor.

"Next stop is Somgarh" he replied.

We grinned looking at each other. Veer Bhaisa, Lakshmi's brother had informed Babasa that they would send a car for us to pick up at the bus stop.

After a few minutes, our stop came and we got off the bus with our bags. I looked around to find 3 to 4 cars parked near the bus stop but we couldn't find Bhaisa or any familiar face. We didn't even have mobile phones to call anyone. All we could do was wait.

"What do we do now?" Sunaina asked

"Let us wait here, someone might come soon," I said and she nodded.

15 minutes passed by but there was no sign for Veer Bhaisa. There were some men around us but we didn't know them. Looking around here and there we spotted a small shop of Paan (betel leaf).

"Should we ask him for help?" Sunaina suggested for the shop owner's help.

"Yes, maybe he can make a call for us," I said.

We moved towards the shop, I quickly picked out a piece of paper from my bag on which important phone numbers were written. I found Veer Bhaisa's number and moved forward to ask for help.

But before we could step any further a pair of bikes came and started circling around us. Sunaina and I jumped out of fear and approached each other.

They started hooting and laughing looking at us. Looking at them I could tell they were threatening and troublemaker boys. They tried to touch us and we were trying our best to move away from them. But we couldn't find our way out as they were constantly circling around us.

We looked around but couldn't find anyone other than cars, those men didn't seem to be around anywhere now. I looked around but no one could come for help as this was a village hence not a very large population could be spotted. Now, only we had to do something.

Sunaina got terrified as one of them got down and approached her, quickly I pulled her towards me and we hugged each other. I was also terrified as it was not our home. I was missing my Bhaisa a lot at this moment. Suddenly tears approached my eyes as I didn't know what could happen now.

"Don't dare to touch her," I said after collecting some strength.

They laughed wildly upon hearing me.
