"ɪ ᴄᴀɴ'ᴛ ʙ-ʙᴇʟɪᴇᴠᴇ ᴛʜɪꜱ," Bill said, his head in his hands.
"Trust me, I don't want to move, either," [Name] replied, looking distraught. The couple had been together for over a year, and they were going strong. It was impossible to hate either one of the couple (unless you were the Bowers gang, of course, but they all seemed to disappear quickly after the events of the summer of 1989). [Name] had been the one to ask Bill out, and they quickly became Derry's dream couple.
However, nothing lasts forever, and [Name]'s mother had gotten a new job opportunity— on the coast of Oregon. Just like the rest of their friends, Bill was devastated. The person in his life who had grounded him, who had shown him what it was like to love, and who guided him through one of his worst moments in life— She would be gone.
Bill looked up from his hands at the torn face of his girlfriend. They were in his room, previously working on their spring history projects and preparing for an upcoming test in Honors Chemistry. [Name] had felt the time was right, as they were taking a break from studying and just talking about their lives. Though, the time was not right.
[Name] stood in the middle of Bill's floor, the hardwood cool beneath her bare feet. [Bill] was sitting on the edge of his bed, his hands tousling his chestnut brown hair. Finally, after another moment of silence, he stood and dropped his hands, looking up at his girlfriend with a betrayed look on his face. His eyes, once stormy, were glistening with tears. "I-I c-can't believe this," he repeated, still in shock.
[Name] dropped her shoulders in surrender, bowing her head in disappointment. Looking up at him with hopeful eyes through her [color] hair, she opened her arms and tilted her head, offering the warmth of her touch. Bill didn't hesitate to step forward and wrap his bony arms around his girlfriend, a sinking feeling entering his body.
"I'm sorry," [Name] whispered into his shoulder, breathing deeply to remember how he smelled; rain, lemons, and fresh bread. Bill ran a hand over her hair, pulling her deeper into the embrace. He shook his head, holding back tears.
"You h-have nothing to be s-sorry for," he choked out, mimicking her actions. He breathed in the smell of her, wanting to relish this moment while he could; laundry detergent, new shoes, and cut grass. A tear traced down his reddening cheek, making him lift a hand to wipe his face. After Georgie died and the battle was over, Bill fell into a deep depression. [Name] was the one to bring him out, shining a flashlight in the darkness of his everyday life. She had been with him the entire time, helping him when he needed it most even when no one else wanted to. She was always there for him, from the time they met in the sixth grade to now, on the brink of adulthood.
Who could he count on now, in this time when everything was changing?
[Name] pulled out of the hug and pressed a cool kiss to the side of Bill's forehead, not wanting to quite leave the warm embrace she was trapped in. Bill lifted his head from her shoulder and kissed her lips, his own slightly chapped and hers tasting like strawberry chapstick. The pair stood in silence, living in solidarity as the rest of the world moved on without them. Steadily, as the kisses became longer and warmer and the atmosphere shifted, it began to rain. Usually, Bill hated the rain because it reminded him of Georgie and the awful day he died. But now, he could hardly care.
The rain tinked against the windows, racing trails down the thick glass and creating little rivers. Inside the room, safe and warm, the young couple began their descent. The heat radiating from Bill's body was enough to make [Name] shiver as they slid beneath the sheets, their hands intertwined and their minds blown wide open.
[Name] whispered her love for Bill between cracks of thunder and spurts of lightning. Bill pressed kisses anywhere he felt he could. Their hearts beat in sync. Their blood pulsed in unison. Their spirits lifted the other.
Bill lay beside his lover, his eyes trailing over her features. She was beautiful.
[Name] lay beside her lover, her eyes welling with tears at the sight of him. He was beautiful.
"I love you," she said to him.
"I love you, too," he replied.
ɪᴛ ᴡᴀꜱ ᴏᴠᴇʀ.
It only took six words to shatter the hearts of both [Name] and Bill, even though they knew it was probably for the best.
"I think . . . we should break up," she whispered, her eyes turned to the ground. Bill had stopped by her house with a bouquet and a box in hand, hoping that they could agree to do long distance. In his mind, he knew from the moment she told him she was moving that there was a chance [Name] would want to break up.
Bill's hands dropped slightly to his side. "Oh. Uh."
"I'm sorry," [Name] said, her eyes welling up with tears. "I don't want to, trust me. I love you so much." She reached out a hand and put it on the side of his face, lifting it to hers. "But I can't stand not being with you."
Bill nodded, shutting his eyes to keep the tears from escaping and leaning his head into his girlfriend's hand. He thrust his gifts forward into [Name]'s arms, knowing that at least she would have something to remember him by.
"I'm sorry, Bill," she said, taking the flowers and box. "I hate to do this."
"I kn-know," he stuttered, wiping his cheeks of tears. "I love you."
[Name] smiled softly. "I love you too, Billy." She shut the door and crossed from the mud hall to the kitchen, where she set down the gifts and pulled out a chair. Sweeping her hair out of her face, she opened the box to see a set of three rings, all in [gold/silver] and fitted with her ring size. Taped to the top of the box was a note that read, "I know you're moving so here are some rings to remember me by :) -Billy"
[Name] sighed and slid the rings onto her fingers, knowing she would never take them off. She put the flowers in a vase and breathed them in, feeling a touch of sadness. She already missed Bill and they hadn't even moved yet. Her heart was heavy and so were her tired feet as she trudged upstairs and flopped onto her bed, falling asleep and dreaming of a place where she could go with Bill. Somewhere safe.
Somewhere far away.
