"The trolls?" Sophie asked slowly. She and Tarina made eye contact and seemed to come to some conclusion without even speaking.
"Hmmm..." Tarina said. "I've never heard of this way of communication between our species before."
Mr. Forkle handed Kai the notes back. "It is very outdated and many elves would rather let the council handle these kinds of communications."
"Wait so it was a way for non-nobility elves to communicate with the trolls?" Biana asked.
Mr. Forkle nodded. "Precisely."
"Okay... so why does Gisela want Kai to know that?" Tam asked, again saying what everyone was thinking.
"If I'm being honest... I have no idea what Miss Sencen is doing," Fokrle said. "But I do intend on figuring it out."
Mr Forkle turned towards the goblins. "We need to set up a meeting to get Miss Behar a bodyguard of her own," he said.
Kai bit her tongue to keep her from protesting. It wasn't that she didn't want a goblin bodyguard, she was just nervous about having a 7-foot shadow follow her around everywhere.
Sandor looked towards the other goblins, who all seemed to come to the same conclusion as him.
"I think we know someone who will be perfect," he said.
The group looked towards Kai, who smiled. "Thank you," she said. She really did appreciate their help.
Linh grabbed her hand softly, "I'll take her home and let Tiergan know about the situation," she said.
Home. Kai's mind seemed to fixate on the word.
As Kai lay in bed she realized how much she missed having a true home. Home used to be with her dad, but with him gone, she'd become lost.
Kai wiped her tears as she slowly slipped off her bed. She knew that she shouldn't be doing this, but now that she was getting a bodyguard she knew that she needed to.
She gripped the note tightly in her hand as she quietly opened the back door. She had to be careful not to wake Wyile since his room was close by.
Carefully, she sprinted across the soft grass until she reached the million steps leading down to the edge of the property.
Kai knew it was wrong, she knew she should've shown the others the note as soon as she saw it but she didn't. Somehow she just felt like she needed to do this alone.
"I knew you'd come," the familiar voice said from the darkness.
Kai whipped her head around to look for Gisela, but she wasn't there
"I had to make sure you actually came alone," Gisela said from Kai's right. "That you wouldn't show your friends the true reason I had to visit your home."
Kai could feel her heart pounding in her chest, and she felt like throwing up. All the horrible memories of being in the Neverseen base flash through her mind and it makes her knees feel weak.
"You aren't speaking girl," Gisela said from behind Kai. "What's wrong?"
Her voice almost sounded sympathetic, it was like she actually cared about Kai's well-being.
"I...I want to know what really happened to my father," Kai demanded before she could even think.
Kai was already veering off plan from what she originally wanted to say.
Gisela said nothing so she continued. "Umber said he didn't die in a fire."
Kai heard a sigh come from her left and she turned to see Gisela coming towards her and she scrambled away from her, making Gisela shake her head.
"We can't help each other if you don't come near me," she said in a soft voice that did not match her scarred body at all.
"I don't need your help," Kai snapped as she held her meddler between them as a barrier.
Gisela laughed. "You are so very wrong," She said. "But you were right about one thing."
"Your father never died in a fire."
