"You're Forkle!" Kai shouted. "I mean Forkle is him?"
Kai was just confusing herself now, she couldn't figure out how he was able to be two people at once.
"I know you probably have many questions, and I will at some point get to them but for now I just wanted you to know that if you need anything I am here at Foxfire," Mr Forkle told her.
Kai didn't know what to say but Keefe interrupted before she had to respond.
"My mom visited you?" He said.
He framed it like a question, but Kai could tell that really, he was just saying what everyone already knew. Gisela visited Kai and gave her a rock to give to Keefe. It seemed unimportant to Kai, but maybe Keefe knew what it was.
"Um... yes," Kai said awkwardly. "She left me a note."
Keefe smiled, but Kai could tell there was pain behind it.
"Well, that was stupid," he said. "You should never listen to her."
Kai fidgeted with the rock, which was stowed safely away in her pocket. She had failed to tell Forkle about the object and why Gisela had given it to her. She didn't want to make the situation worse by telling them she had actually decided to do Gisela the favor.
"I'm sure that it was all the usual, Keefe your legacy, stuff," he said with an eerily perfect imitation of his mother.
Kai saw his jaw clench when she cringed. It was pretty much exactly what Lady Gisela had told her.
"Pretty much," Kai said softly.
Awkward silence filled the air until the bell rang loudly, making Kai jump.
Forkle cleared his throat and turned to Kai, "Well Miss Behar you'd better get back to class." He looked towards Keefe. "You as well Mr. Sencen."
Keefe sighed, but didn't argue as he reluctantly walked out the door.
Kai followed silently and tried not to seem suspicious to Mr. Forkle. She needed to explain to Keefe what had actually happened without the Blackswan finding out. Kids flooded the hallway, so Kai had to fight to catch up to him.
"Keefe, look," Kai said as they turned a corner with less people. "Meet me here after school, there's more that Forkle doesn't know."
Keefe nodded. "I knew mommy dearest couldn't just leave you with nothing to do for her."
Kai sighed sadly as he walked away and down some stairs. She could tell that he was not doing great after hearing the news that his mother had come to her again.
She also could tell that those stairs clearly lead to the level fives, which he was not one.
...
"FINALLY," Kyo practically danced around when the bell rang for lunch.
Kai laughed and headed up towards her locker, where she saw Gracelyn and Zayne. They seemed anxious and on edge which made Kai feel the same.
"Guys what's wrong?" She asked as she approached them.
Before Kai could even react, Gracelyn shoved her. It wasn't hard or anything, but it was surprising.
"How could you!" She said in a whisper-yell. "You met with them BY YOURSLEF?"
Kai was going to kill whoever told them that.
"That was so dangerously stupid and I'm so glad you're okay." Gracelyn pulled Kai into a hug.
"Thanks," Kai said as Gracelyn released her from the embrace. "I'm glad I'm okay too."
Kai turned to Zayne, who still seemed on edge.
"Zayne, she didn't say anything about you," Kai said. "She was only talking about Keefe."
Relief seemed to radiate off of him once she said that.
"Okay... okay good." He said. "I was worried that she had found out."
Kai decided not to point out how obvious it was that he was worried about that.
The three of them talked about other school stuff as they walked to the lunch table. Kasi and Amaria were already there, while Bricen was heading over with Angin.
"Where's Asher?" Kai asked Amaria as she sat down.
"I don't know, but he's your man so you should find him." She said jokingly.
Kai sighed though, knowing that she probably should go find him.
"I'll be right back," she said to Amaria.
Turning towards Kyo, Kai whispered. "Could you try to stay out of sight?" She asked. "I know where he is."
Kyo snorted. "Aye aye captain."
Kai rolled her eyes, but trusted that Kyo would do it.
