"Four days!" Kai shouted.
It wasn't as much as she'd been thinking, but it was still a long time.
"At least it's not two weeks," Fitz grumbled. "Also hi, I'm Fitz,"
He looked a lot better than when Kai had seen him. His eyes were open now, and he looked much less pale. He was also fitted with a new bandage around his leg and abdomen.
"Yeah I know," she laughed softly. "I saw you when you were asleep,"
He dragged his hand down his face and groaned.
"Ugh, everyone just watched me in my sleep?" He said.
Kai laughed and looked at him intently, his hair was messy but in a cute way. His clothes were super wrinkled and disheveled, but he still looked good. Sophie was similar, her hair was a disaster, but she still was able to pull it off. Her clothes were rumpled, but cute.
"To be fair, you probably watched me sleep for four days," Kai says. Which is definitely weird to think about, since she barely knew these people. "Well, unless you recently woke up,"
He shook his head, "I woke up your first day here,"
"Oh," Kai said. Now she wondered what she looked like when she was brought in. It couldn't have been pretty at all.
"I'll let Forkle know you woke up," Elwin said. "Also there have been many people wanting to visit you,"
He grabbed an elixer and handed it to her. It was grey in color, which was very weird to look at. She knew it couldn't have tasted good, but she decided not to argue and just get it over with. She popped the cork and downed the drink. It wasn't as bad as she had thought, it tasted more like a sweet and tart flavor.
"Oh wow, that is a first with you," Elwin said, his eyes wide with surprise. "You always put up a fight,"
Kai rolled her eyes. She does not always fight the medicine, just most of the time. Kai doesn't know when her distrust of medicine started, but she always remembered her dad telling her to be careful about what elixirs to drink.
"Anyways... some of the visitors aren't in the blackswan, but they know you're here in the Healing Center," Elwin said.
"Okay," Kai said slowly, she didn't understand where Elwin was going with this conversation.
"So I'm thinking that we should bring you out to the regular area, just for a bit, so it doesn't seem suspicious," Elwin said. His hand was twitching, like he was nervous about this idea, but was being forced to do it.
"I mean yeah," Kai said, "It won't hurt me?"
Elwin cringed slightly, making Kai worry. She wasn't going to do anything that would mess up her leg forever.
"I hope," Elwin said, which was not the answer that Kai had hoped for at all. "I mean the cots have wheels, so we can try to roll you out. The doorway is big enough. I would just be worried about knocking you around,"
Kai thought about the whole "rolling her around the situation," which sounded weird and embarrassing, but it would let her see Amaria, who she really missed right then.
"Yeah, I'm game," She said. "But who's going to push me, because seeing how tired you are right now, there is no way you're going to,"
Elwin groaned, which sounded more like a dying half-scream than a groan. He reached up and rubbed his temples.
"I guess it's going to have to wait then," He said.
Kai sighed but agreed with him. She did want to see her friends, but she didn't want Elwin to feel bad.
"I'll try to figure something else out tomorrow," Elwin said tiredly and he headed out into the main area of the Healing Center.
Sophie and Fitz were again staring into each other's eyes, which got old fast and Kai soon felt her eyes start to get heavy. As much as she wanted to fight it, she let her body fall into darkness.
Kai wasn't sure when she next woke up, but she groggily sat up and looked around the room. She saw five pairs of blue eyes staring at her.
"Kai!" Keefe said from his seat across the room. "You're awake from your slumber."
Kai smiled and rubbed her eyes. "Yup."
Elwin and Tiergan rushed to her side. Elwin snapped a purple light around her ankle while Tiergan grabbed her hand.
"Kai, I am so sorry for what happened to you!" He said sadly. "I -I never thought..."
Tiergan wasn't even able to finish his sentence, and Kai knew that he really was sorry.
"It's okay," She said. "It wasn't your fault."
He didn't look convinced, but at least he didn't argue. Meanwhile, Elwin was still flashing orbs around Kai's ankle and head. And Sophie was talking to Keefe and Fitz, it was something about promises and recklessness, Kai wasn't really listening.
"Keefe... your mom saved me," Kai said. It made everyone in the room snap their attention back to her. Obviously, Mr. Forkle hadn't told them. "She said to tell you hello,"
Keefe stood there, he seemed to be frozen in shock.
"She saved my life, they were going to kill me," Kai shuttered at the memory.
Keefe ran his hand through his hair and his face was blank. Sophie began to call his name worriedly.
"She saved you?" He asked coming close to grab Kai's wrist. She assumed the movement was to read her emotions.
"Yes, she untied my hands and made a distraction for my escape,"
Keefe sighed, "You must be a part of her plan," He said. "Why else would she let you go?"
"I don't know,"
Everyone in the room was silently thinking, or at least Kai was.
Keefe smiled sadly at Kai as he grabbed hands with Tiergan. "Well Kai, I'll make sure to tell your boyfriend you are awake. He's been asking about you." Keefe winked as they leaped away.
Kai felt her cheeks warm. "I don't have a boyfriend," She muttered to herself.
Elwin chuckled but didn't say anything as he walked into his alchemy station in the back.
