LILITH
The words rang in my ears.
'You will be marrying Lucian.'
It's like I was in an empty arena and the sentence echoed around me, not stopping. I didn't felt the chills run down my spine even when my parents told me that I was going to marry Sebastian.
Not even when I moved into this house.
I blinked a few times, not knowing what to say.
"What?" The choked out word escaped my lips when the silence prevailed in the dark office.
The whole room was surrounded by wooden bookshelves and old paintings. There was the big rectangular mahogany table where Frederic was retreated and the chairs at the front where Lucian and Sloane were sitting.
The curtains of the windows were drawn to the side and the sun setting behind the mountain was beautifully visible through the tinted glass.
Sebastian has mentioned to me once that every window glass is tinted due to protection from any type of attack from a far.
Sniper attacks on houses of the families wasn't really common but still everyone was very cautious.
"You heard us right. You are marrying Lucian." Sloane spoke again. She looked exhausted but nevertheless, she didn't let go of her strict voice.
"But why?" I asked, my voice laced with confusion.
Goosebumps rose on my skin when I saw her eyes narrow at me.
Lucian turned his head towards me as well and there was nothing but hatred there. His gaze traveled from my toes to my head and then he averted them away in annoyance.
"Your parents promised us a bride. You didn't give us a grandchild while being married to Sebastian and you'll do it now." Of course she still wanted a baby out of this situation.
I knew how much it meant to the families to have a heir, someone who was going to carry out the name in the future.
That's why she was so keen on me birthing them a grandchild. Sloane and Frederic were already in their mid sixties.
A lot of the eldest members of the families were either in jail cells or assisted. It was rare that the older members were well and in good conditions.
Usually they were the biggest targets as well as the younger children because without the guidance, the next to take the throne was lost and easier to manipulate.
No one was really safe but we knew who was most likely to be attacked first.
So they of course wanted a heir before they were gone. Which was not in my favour. There was no way I was going to let Lucian be the one to give me a child.
With Sebastian I knew that he was never going to touch me so I was at least relieved of that burden.
Now with Lucian I had no idea what he had in mind. I mean I knew he didn't like me but his mind worked in different and confusing ways. At least from what I was able to see in the past year.
"What if I don't want to?" I fisted my hands that were hanging on my side.
I never voiced my concerns and disagreements before because I knew it was going to be in vain. This time I had to try.
"You don't have a choice, dear. You'll get married and that's it." She empathised the word dear, making sure that I know how much she disliked me.
"Do my parents know about this?" My nails dug into my palms from the force I was using to fist my hands. The anxiety was building up in my chest and it was making harder for me to breathe.
