Raine was going to be honest, they hated what they were hearing right now.
"You... you mean-"
"Yes... she'll have to lose her leg." the doctor said.
"Can... can I see her?"
"Yes, right this way."
Raine was brought into the room of Their daughter, seeing the girl looking down, very upset. The doctor left to give them a moment. Raine sat in a chair next to the hospital bed.
"Skara?"
Skara just sat there, not even caring to look up. She just looked at the leg that was going to be lost. She was many things right now. Scared, angry, nervous, there's a lot of things going through the girls head right now.
"Skara... it's going to be okay." Raine said, putting a hand on Skara's shoulder.
Skara's eyes filled with tears, making Raine go into parent mode.
"No, don't cry, everything will be alright." Raine said, holding Skara.
"No it won't!" Skara said, "I was a member of marching band, I can't do with if I lose my leg!"
Raine held the crying girl, trying their best to comfort her.
"I'm just going to be worthless." Skara said, "And then you'll abandon me too."
Raine looked shocked.
"Skara... I will NEVER abandon you." Raine said, "Did I ever tell you the story of how I adopted you?"
Skara looked at Raine.
"It was 15 years ago, on December 23, there was a horrible blizzard going on, the temperature was already well below freezing, it was already getting to 20 below zero out." Raine said, closing their eyes, "And... I was in a bad place mentally. I had just been laid off two days before, I was mugged, my car got broken into, and I just feel into a depression that I couldn't get out of. That night..."
Raine put an arm around Skara's shoulders and pulled her close.
"That night I was going to end it." They said, "I... I had a bottle of painkillers and... I wanted to die... I felt like there was nothing left, I just felt like I had to end it. I was alone, young, stupid... I figured life would never get better."
Raine took off their glasses and wiped their eyes of tears. Remembering that night was hard for them, but what happened will always be the greatest thing to ever happen to them.
"I was about to put the pills in my mouth... when there was a knock on the door. There was no need for me to open it, I could've just ignored it and finished what I planned... but there was something in the back of my head, telling me to check it out. It could've been someone that was hurt and needed help, or it could've been someone trying to kill me."
Skara looked at their parent with confusion, she's never heard this story before, she had no idea her parent ever battled depression before.
"When I opened the door, I didn't see anyone... then I heard a small cry." Raine said, smiling at Skara, "I found a small baby, underfed, freezing, and on the brink of death. I dropped the pills and immediately brought her inside."
Skara felt tears build up in her own eyes, having a feeling where this is heading.
"That baby... something in me that day, something changed. Maybe it was her smiling when I first held her, maybe it was her reaching for me when she saw me, maybe it was because I needed someone in my life... whatever it was... that baby saved my life." Raine said, before kissing Skara's cheek, "That baby was you. You saved my life before you could even speak... I don't know what happened to you, or why your birth parents abandoned you, but I won't, not after everything you've done for me."
Skara sniffled.
"Even... even if I have to lose a limb?"
"Well, if that happens... I guess I better give the rest of you some more attention to make up for it." Raine said, pelting Skara's head with kisses.
The injured girl giggled.
"Nini, stop!" Skara said, trying to push Raine off.
Raine pulled Skara close.
"You were the greatest thing to ever happen to me." Raine said, "Never forget that."
"I won't." Skara said, closing her eyes and hugging Raine, "I love you, Nini."
"I love you too, Songbird." Raine said, giving Skara a kiss to the forehead, "Never forget that."
As a heart touching moment was going on, in another part of the city, Lilith was fuming.
"So, please explain to me... how did every... Single... ONE... of those school shooters fucking die!?" Lilith yelled to the officers in the prisoner containment, "We needed them to find out why and how an attack this planned out and deadly happened! Someone set this up, and because you simpletons can't do your fucking job, we don't know who did it, or why!"
The officers remained stoic, but inside, they were terrified. There was one thing very well known throughout the station. Any officer would sooner stare down the barrel of a gun... than stare down the angry detective. Lilith let out an annoyed sigh.
"Can this day get any worse?"
Steve came up to Lilith.
"Lilith, bad news... Dennis Carradine is also dead."
That just pushed Lilith over the edge. She looked at Steve.
"Get the forensic boys in here and get this solved." She said, "I'm going to the gun range."
