"hari?" hari's gaze raised from her phone's screen once she heard her name being called by a familiar voice, her thick brows knitting slightly after recognizing the man standing before her as her head tilted sideways in confusion. she turned her phone off and smiled from ear to ear with whole face lighting up.
"yejun? what are you doing here?" jang yejun, hari's long time crush, shrugged his shoulders with a small grin cracking his lips, sliding his hands into his pockets before glancing at the hour displayed on the screen hanging from the ceiling and averting his chocolate eyes back on her.
god, why does her heart beat so fast whenever he looks at her with those eyes? she's supposed to be over him, especially now that her marriage is beginning to go well.
"i was nearby so i decided to pay you a visit, wanna go out for lunch?" her soft smile slowly faded off her kissable lips as she remembered the commitment she made to her husband a few hours prior, pressing her lips together before glancing at the hour displayed on her phone's screen and realizing he was already thirty minutes late.
well, something must've come up, so it shouldn't hurt for her to go out with him instead.
hari glanced around to make sure sunghoon wasn't anywhere near before looking back at yejun and nodding her head. "yeah, i wouldn't mind." she can simply text him that something came up last minute and she can't go, it's not like he probably could either.
oh, how wrong was she.
sunghoon had been standing there for longer than he could remember, a bouquet of flowers in his grasp as he watched the scene unfold before his eyes with lips previously stretched by a smile now dropped in disappointment. his heart ached recalling the way she looked at him, her doe eyes full of adoration for the guy standing before her, and knowing she'll probably never look at him that way.
the phone in his jacket inner pocket vibrated a few times as he slowly slid it out, his screen displaying some messages from hari telling him she couldn't make it because she had too much work to do before he raised his gaze from the device to watch her leave with disappointed eyes. what was he even expecting? he always knew that he was just a rebound for her.
🗝
after politely greeting goodbye to her coworkers, hari pulled the handle of the car door in front of her and opened the said door before getting into the vehicle that was waiting for her in front of the building. the air felt heavy and the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife, the girl glancing at sunghoon who seemed lost in a trance of infinite thoughts with an emotionless expression adorning his soft features. "did anything happen at work?"
he remained quiet at the question that snapped him back to reality, his slim fingers wrapped around the leather-covered steering wheel before he diverted his irises on her maintaining the soulless stare. "am i simply a rebound to you?" her straight brows knitted slightly upon registering his question, meeting eyes with his tapioca pearl ones that held nothing but sadness.
"what are you talking about..?" hoon sighed deeply at her playing dumb act, fluttering his eyelids closed before scoffing quietly. "do you think i'm stupid? do you think i don't know that you still have feelings for whoever that guy you were with today was?"
her eyes almost popped out of her eye sockets once she let his words sink in, her soft lips parting as if to say something but she was cut off by her husband before she could even breathe. "yeah, i know that today you didn't have anything to do at work. wanna know how? cause i saw it with my own eyes. i saw you going out with that guy and dumping me last minute."
hari was left speechless, lips parted yet the only thing that slipped past them was dry air, looking down with guilt eating her alive as her upper teeth found her lower lip to suppress the tears brimming in the corners of her doe eyes. she shouldn't even be crying when sunghoon is the one that got hurt, but she can't help it.
she really likes him, she swears, and even she knows how wrong it is for her heart to beat so rapidly whenever she's around her friend, but she can't help it. she feels stuck between a rock and a hard place.
"you're not a rebound hoo—"
"do you know why i was thirty minutes late? because i was getting you flowers." sunghoon pointed at the now withered bouquet of flowers on the back seat which only made hari feel even worse than she already felt, glancing between the flowers and his dejected expression while feeling like a terrible monster. she's so stupid, and she has no excuse to be such an awful wife.
"did last night.. mean nothing to you?"
