Twenty-Three
THE POLICE ARRIVED after half an hour. Once David finished providing them with the necessary information, the police swiftly surrounded the entire mansion with police tape from the outside. They also deployed a bunch of officers with K-9 dogs that specialize in poison tracking and did a full sweep around the premises.
David also accompanied them to the winery and storage room. He expected the room to be empty when they arrived, and he was right. He wasn't disappointed, though. With the whole island in total lockdown, the chances of that assassin escaping are very slim.
Nang makabalik sila sa auction area ay agad nagsitayuan ang mga kaibigan ni Warren at lumapit kay Chief of Police Dante Mallari.
"Sir, kumusta po? Totoo po 'bang may lason yung mga iinumin naming wine?" Walang prenong tanong ni Kevin. Bakas sa pagmumukha niya ang takot at pangamba.
"Sa ngayon po ay wala pa akong konkretong sagot para sainyong mga katanungan. Isa o dalawang oras po kasi ang itatagal bago lumabas ang resulta galing sa ating forensic analysts. Pero mas mainam na 'rin po na wag muna kayong iinom o kakain ng anumang pagkain ang mayroon sa mansyon na ito hangga't hindi pa dumadating ang resulta."
"At kung totoo 'man na may gustong magtangka sa buhay ni Mr. Summers, 'mas maganda if dito muna kayo magpapalipas ng gabi." Diretso nitong sagot sa kanila.
"Ano?!" Halos sabay-sabay nilang tanong, maliban kina David at Warren na tahimik na pinoproseso ang mga sinabi ni Mallari.
"Does that mean we're stuck in here for the whole night?" Maarteng tanong ni Angela habang pinapaypayan ang sarili gamit ang kanyang kamay.
"With no food and water on top of that, how are we going to survive?!" Histerikal na saad ni Lara.
"Lara, it's just for the night. I'm pretty sure we can endure that much." Warren sounds so exhausted and defeated.
Sinamaan ni Lara ng tingin si Warren bago ito nilapitan. Naiwan sa kanyang likod ang mabibigat na yabag ng kanyang suot na heels.
"Easy for you to say! If it weren't for this bodyguard of yours, we wouldn't have been stuck here in the first place."
"Quit it, okay?!" Warren's voice boomed in all corners of the area. "He saved us from being potentially murdered, Galvan. If it weren't for him, all of us would've been sprawled on the goddamn floor with our mouths foaming."
"How are you even sure that he's telling the truth?" Galit na saad ng babae.
"I just know, okay?" Desididong sabi ni Warren. "Now go back to your seat and wait for the fucking result to come out. Stop with this crap already. You're beginning to sound like Xander over there."
"Fuck you, Summers," singit ni Xander habang nakasaludo ang gitnang daliri niya kay Warren.
Warren also did the same thing and muttered, "Right back at you, asshole."
Lara groaned in frustration.
"This is a fucking chaos!" She screamed, and then she turned her heels around and stormed out of the auction area.
Her heels yet again made clacking sounds as they made contact with the floor of the mansion.
On the other hand, David flinched when he heard Lara's words. He knows it's wrong to blame himself for something that was beyond his control, but the nickname he earned as 'chaos magnet' was making him think otherwise.
He just shakes his head and hopes that he's not doing it again.
"Pahangin lang ako sa labas chief." Paalam ni David kay Mallari. Tinanguan lang siya ng matanda.
